@ChadLubinski Yes I was using their highest value R rating pad 3 years ago. I got so cold that night I had to hike 2 miles back to my vehicle. Luckily I was just out in late fall in my local hike in camp sites. I've camped with other pads under 20 degrees just fine. There's numerous videos on KZbin of others saying their R ratings aren't close to what they say.

I got slammed with AMS after moving from Paradise to Muir which I didn't expect at all (but I've since learned is very common). I had a terrible night but luckily recovered enough by morning to continue. Agree with you that Hood was more technical. Climbed a very icy Old Chute which was much scarier than anything I did on Rainier. We were able to glissade down from Muir nicely w/o trashbags but this depends entirely on the snow conditions so that's a good point. Glissading from Muir is so much better than walking. Paradise to Muir was roasting hot. DC to summit was freezing cold in my heaviest gear. Gotta have the layering system dialed in. Really bad traffic in this park...no joke.

You did it all wrong. 😁 It's a myth that ultrarunning needs endless hours of training. 25 -80 miles is usually what it takes. With 80 mile per week you are in world class ultrarunning territory. In the range of 25-50 miles per week you can do most if not all races if you build up to it properly. You might not win them but you can do them. And no long run needs to be longer than 3 hours / 20 miles whatever comes first.

No one even considered starting at McKee Draw when doing the Highline until 5-6 years ago. The Highline Trail was always Leidy Peak or even Chepeta Lake to Mirror Lake Hwy. Locals were only concerned about hiking the Uintas, not trail 025. Even the authoritative book on the Unitas by Jeff and Brad Probst say the Highline Trail is Leidy Peak to Mirror Lake Hwy. So don't feel like you didn't complete the Highline Trail if you started at Leidy or Chepeta...both are just fine. And in Rock Creek Basin, going around to Helen and Lightning Lakes and even up to Gladys and Rosalie Lakes is prettier anyway (even more so after the fire).

I did the John Muir Trail in the early 70s things were different in those days almost everyone that started finished and I did the whole hike without a food stop. I also left really early June 23 to be exact going north to south. I had all the topo maps and Starrs Guide. I got lost once and it was mostly because of a lot of snow. There was a lot of snow, but I also left really early and walking on snow when it’s frozen was a lot easier than when it started to thaw in the afternoon I also highly recommend to start hiking even before you can see where you’re going. It does two things: to get you warm you get over the passes early And allows you to spend the afternoons, relaxing. I was occupied fishing every day and of course I ate trout every single day. I also never had a drop of rain fall on me. I’ve hiked sections of the trail and some of the side sections many times and usually the rains come in July and early August And can be pretty nasty. Also, in those days there were no Bear buckets we slung our stuff in the trees. I only had a problem with bears in Yosemite and that problem is still the same. Those bears are not necessarily really wild anymore today the ones you meet like in Kings Canyon Sequoia Keep their distance. It took 21 days with one easy day

Save more by dabbing the wax block on the iron for a second, then rub it on the board, repeat. You use half the amount of wax. This is called Crayoning because it looks like the texture of a crayon on the board. Once it's covered then iron it.

I had a similar experience. When I got the Lone Peak 3's I became a fan, and bought three pairs of Cayd, some high top hikers and over time, three more pairs of hiking shoes. One pair the sole started coming off, as with yours, and another pair damaged my right big toe, though I couldn't figure out why. That was unforgivable, and I threw them away though they were not used that much. What I think is that VF Corp bought the original Altra brand from Icon Health and Fitness in Logan, Utah, and cheapened them to cash in. I stayed with zero drop but won't ever buy another pair of Altras.
