Great interview, i can and always will connect with john Foxx ever since i purchased the Metamatic album, @ 2:10 you mention Endlessly, a couple of months ago at the time of this comment i commented on a youtube video titled 044-JOHN FOXX - Endlessly (1982) comes up as the first video at the top if typed in, "i wonder who the lady is giving John the cold shoulder" Well to my surprise the not so young now lady replied with a very nice explanation and kind comment about John, i was blown away by this as i felt i had a connection to the video and john, may sound bizarre but looking up the user profile you can see it is definitely the Lady in question, i also saw the ballerina connection in the video as the lady in question is a Ballerina.

The best band on earth from 71-80... Now it's a Tull tribute band/ Ian Anderson retirement project that only faintly resembles the classic ( Martin Barre) version.

Totally agree, same morons did it with Jeff Buckley. This lionization is absurd, he produced music, was a gifted songwriter, that's it.
@portcullis5622Ай бұрын
It isn't realy a Christmas song, nor is it anti-religious. It is against the crass commercialisation of the winter festival, which has grown much more cynical and ruthless since 1975. Most of us love "fairy stories". We just resent having the same ones relentlessly forced upon us from an early age. As we grow older, we like to think for ourselves and question things, including ancient books.
@kw1919323 күн бұрын
Actually it is about the loss of innocence. Peter Sinfield who wrote the lyrics for the song has authoritatively stated that it is about said loss and not the over commercialization of Christmas. Regardless, a glorious piece of music. Cheers!
@dizzy20203 күн бұрын
It's definately anti-religious - "until I believed in the Israelite" is not a positive sentiment in there I believe Greg admitted it was both anti-commercial and anti-religious - but ironically he performed it in Churches and Cathedrals which is - well - who cares, it's the sound of Christmas for me whatever it means...
@portcullis56223 күн бұрын
@dizzy2020 I take it that it was anti-religious brainwashing of children. "Until I believed" implies that.
@kw191932 күн бұрын
@@dizzy2020 As to the first part of your comment - there is definitely a dose of cynicism in the lyrics but I don't know that I would go so far as to say that it's anti-religious, Sinfield would probably say that religion was just a "minor mozzie" in the piece. Never heard that Lake considered it to be an attack on religion, but then Lake, who didn't understand what he was singing, never did 'get' it. Peter Sinfield who, once again, wrote the lyrics stated on more than one occasion that it was about the loss of innocence and not over-commercialization. Regardless, a lovely and memorable song. Cheers!
@portcullis56223 сағат бұрын
@@dizzy2020 I think it means "Until I (was forced to) believe in The Israelites". The resentment comes from childhood brainwashing.

He has that same talk talk feeling of ignoring the normal and being insular, silent, and free to be different in breaking away from normality. Having bought all talk talk' albums, and then cd's, i feel james Marsh's work has been with me a long time, right up to ben wardle's book. James Marsh is a great artist.

Just finishing this book and it's fantastic. Hearing so many personal stories from those closest to John helps his fans know the man behind the music, so thank you for putting this out! Now I wish someone would do a project detailing the stories behind the songs he wrote. That would be so interesting.
