You will learn more by watching and carefully listening to him play than in all the violin pedagogy books ever written. Though he’s clearly past his prime, you can still pick up some little subtle secrets.

Now this is authentic old-school golden age violin playing! This cannot be taught. You either have it or you don’t. You might imitate a few true tricks, but the truth will eventually come out that it’s a sham. No imitations here. This guy is the real deal!!!

A tremendous violinist and artist. This kind of playing is rarely heard today. Definitely an old school violinist of the Golden Age.

A fine example in life about not giving in to destructive forces - (the coughing) (even though it got to him for a while around 5.30) - but to continue the pursuit of excellence and beauty regardless!

Abram Shtern makes every note glow no matter what! I have never heard any other violinist do this like this before! What a great artist! As a violonist I am so inspired!

Now this is singing on the violin! Shtern makes every note glow in its overtones rather than just "hitting the right note", whether it is a long or short one, with or without vibrato.

I discovered Abram Shtern's music yesterday and I feel as if he is now my favourite violinist! Every note he plays glows with overtones - his technique is based on pure artistry and not the other way around - his beauty of tone allows him to have incredible facility in all positions and perfect shifting as if he were holding down a sostenuto pedal of a piano in order to enhance the overtones of each note as he shifts seamlessly on the violin! I also remark how perfectly synchronized his left and right arms are in playing - each note always speaks and always sings - the sonority of every note is established perfectly right at the beginning of the note and the bowing continues and maintains that sound - the sound never fails. For me Shtern IS the violin and the wooden box he plays is just the instrument! the fact that he continued playing with such an outstanding technique well into his 90s is proof that his way of playing showed true mastery.

Yes, a very fine performance marred by a super cough fest! Was this performed hall or in a tb ward? Well, the last time I performed this piece my best friend's cell phone went off. Unable to shut it, he marched out of the hall, making even more noise!
