Hub Cap and The Wheels at West Plaza, 35th Ave and Bethany. I also remember The Cascades playing there. Good times! West Plaza was the epicenter of my childhood.

My mother and grandmother grew up in the downtown area of Phoenix. Camelback rd was as far north as it went. They had trolly cars in the downtown area. My grandmother did not drive so that is how they got around from store to store. The Orpheum was the only movie theater. I also grew up in Arizona in the old part of Glendale and it was all farmland and desert. It was wonderful, we rode our horses everywhere. I rode around the area where the Cardinal stadium is located now. It was a better time. Now they paved the desert and farmland is gone, more people, more asphalt and the temps are a lot hotter now.

They have let success go to their head. They act like they are doing you a favor now days. There is nothing really spicy left on the menu including the side salsa. Love the idea. Basically the way we make food at my house. Being a military brat born in Japan and family roots in the southwest, we have created a natural fusion of the two worlds = Asia+southwest. But unfortunately it isn't that great in taste anymore in my opinion. Great idea, just not spicy nor flavorful in the true spirit of the two culinary worlds.

This one was produced in 2002. We posted it here two years ago when we dusted it off and re-aired it as part of a series we called "From the Vault." We have everything in a From the Vault playlist if you want to delve into more Arizona history!

Always heartening when people with resources give generously to their communities, or state, in this case. Thoughtful, targeted, impactful!

This should had been titled Phoenix memories from the 70s, not much else was talked about.
@ArizonaPBS25 күн бұрын
That's a fair criticism. If we produced a follow-up, what topics would you want to see included?
@desertpotter100325 күн бұрын
Just include more places in Arizona, like what it was like to live in the smaller communities , like Bisbee, Williams, Sedona, Show Low. It seemed to spend most of the time talking about Phoenix. I just think it was titled wrong.

Thank you, Searle and Sue Hart-Wadley! We have been a sustaining members of PBS stations in Los Angeles and Seattle, and now Arizona PBS for the eleven years we've lived here. I hope that this generous donation will indirectly enable Arizona PBS to have fewer pledge drives per year and to reduce the number of commercials between the shows.

My family lived in Maryvale when I was 8 to 10 years old. My brother was born while we lived there. My dad put a $1000 swamp cooler on the roof. He was $50,000 in debt on $50 a week. We picnicked at Encanto Park. There was a tiny paddlewheel on the canal you coukd sail on. I used to walk to Sky Harbor and climb North and South Mountains regularly to watch the sun come up on Phoenix and then watch the smog rise. My sister and I went to Cartwright, Longview and Osborne schools.
