Never understood why they built a tunnel as they could have dug a cutting. Probably like a few railways were they built tunnels because the parasites that owned the land didn’t want it intruded upon. Funny that, as they usually were responsible for clearing the highlands… like the Levinson Gower shower of shit did

1:49 The drone is flying along the length of the old canal tunnel which still exists and is being restored. If you want to find out more, Google Shrewsbury and Newport Canal… although there are many good attempts to reopen her, the people of Newport clearly are not interested which is really sad.

It’s the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal and the tunnel which is being restored. Further along the canal route goes through to Roden where Thomas Telford built a smallish cast iron aqueduct which is still in good shape although cut off from the canal at both ends as the embankment has been levelled.

Absolutely brilliant research. Are we going to see part 3 soon? At Kinnersley there was a bridge over the canal which has been demolished. My dad took me fishing there as a very young boy. I plan to go and see the place where I believe it was. I’ve found a couple of photographs. Do you have any information about it?

It’s such a shame that there is so little will to restore the canal, certainly at Newport, all the key influencers seem to be casting so much doubt on its feasibility that it seems to block the idea. At one time I was subscribing and contributing to the canals funding and then realised Bugger all was ever going to happen. Such a shame

Excellent video. Very interesting to see inside the tunnel. I used to live in sundorne & spent many Happy hours as a boy playing down by the old canal. It would be so good to see it fully restored & reinstated back on the main network👍.

A friend showed this to me today and told me a little of its history, never knew there was a hidden canal under the fields. I like the drone footage on this and the other videos. Subscribed :)

Fascinating, like part 1. I note that the cast iron strapping post on the outside of the top lock gate (the swinging gate) appears to be of the standard Shropshire Union design, of which there's still quite a few on the Audlem flight where we are. So there was some standardisation, which I guess I would expect.

Really excellent presentation, thanks. Re the canal gates going to London- you could enquire of the London Canal museum at King’s Cross which I visited recently- very knowledgeable and helpful there, although I saw no gates at the exhibition.

Thanks for the reply. I have since found out they did go down, but as far as I know they weren't displayed. They were cut up for fire wood in the end. which is very sad.

Fascinating. I've lived by the Shroppie at Audlem for 15 years, but knew little about this part of it, except that I published the book "Shropshire Union Fly-Boats, The Jack Roberts Story", which talks about boating along the canal well over 100 years ago. It's great to actually see what Jack described. Looking forward to the next instalment!

Nice video, thank you. Tree roots have grown into the tunnel, so there are a myriad of fine hanging roots to get thru if you are going to fly thru. You might need the hedge trimmer attachment for your drone !
@Stuvon1012 жыл бұрын
I was hoping to send the drone through, losing the GPS would make it impossible to get nice footage. So we will walk through with the go pro in a couple of months when we get the go ahead.
