Really cool to see the progress on this playfield! It's looking really good after the cleaning, even with the old worn spots and the spots where the magic eraser got a little too aggressive. I understand the dilemma in trying to decide how far to take a restoration, whether or not to do repainting, if it's worth clearcoating a flawed playfield, etc. Honestly it's really easy to get caught up in all the little imperfections - and even the big imperfections - and you could spend forever fixing every little detail, but when the playfield is re-assembled and the lights are flashing and balls are flying you really don't see the flaws. Even with the worn down spots with the missing paint, it just looks like a classic game that has been played a lot. There's something charming about that. Unless you are completely restoring every aspect of the machine to look like factory new and making it a museum piece, it's totally fine to leave it in its worn condition. Even if you do zero re-painting and leave the worn spots as-is, it already looks great cleaned up with the original bright colors after all the years of dirt are removed. Getting a brand new reproduction playfield would be tempting. It's hard to beat a brand new playfield.

Well, I won’t spoil the surprise on which way I went. But I wasn’t able to find a new playfield. I hadn’t really thought about it in the way you describe, as an old museum piece earning its age. That’s a cool way to describe it. It was bad though. Like really bad. Bits of paint flaking all over. If you want to skip ahead, I have a “Countdown is Dirty” thread on Pinside in the restoration section. 🤷‍♂️. It’s up to date. I was saving up these videos until I almost finished blue max so it wouldn’t be so long with t this machine.

Nicely done with the score reel, yes those rivets are a PITA to remove. The one I replaced on my machine 8 years ago is still going strong though so you don't have to worry about the 3D printed part breaking on you. I replaced a second wiper arm about 5 years ago and have left all the other split ones as they still work. Until all score reels have reset to zero the score motor will keep running. The 1000s reel didn't reset to zero on player one that is probably why the score motor kept running, manually move it to zero and try again. You may have a sticky solenoid on the score reel,or the contacts need cleaning on the score reset relay or the contact on the score motor that drives the score reset relay. Love your restored playfield.
@MRNBricks
@MRNBricks 15 күн бұрын
Thanks again for the design! Two of the reels are sloppy. It’s more that they don’t increment into position vs the wipers being in the wrong place. They feel like they need a spring adjustment or something. After I wiggle them a bit, it competes the reset process.
@tmuir1234
@tmuir1234 14 күн бұрын
@@MRNBricks I'm assuming you have replaced the aluminum sleeves in the solenoid with modern nylon ones, if you haven't they can add to the friction and stop the score reel rotating, its a balancing game doing the reels up tight enough to ensure good electrical contact on the wipers and not too tight to give too much friction. Shift the worst ones to the player four scores.

May I ask which bulbs you are using on this machine? Model bulb? Light? Non ghosting?
@MRNBricks
@MRNBricks 15 күн бұрын
Mostly Comet 1SMD. I’m following their “art of LEDs” for EM machines. Looks pretty good. I used non ghosting in the controlled lamps though I’m not 100% sure it’s necessary on an em. Don’t get too crazy, theyre really bright. I did a led or not to led video a while ago comparing two of the same machine side by side with incandescent and led. Pretty interesting.

Hard to diagnose. You’ll probably have to go through and clean all the steppers and switches. And make sure they’re all adjusted right. Unfortunately, the issues you’re describing could be quite a few separate issues that are hard to find in person let alone over text. :(

@@graupe1manually cycle the steppers and score reels and make sure they’re moving freely and the switches are adjusted. Manually make the relays work a few times, being sure all the switches are adjusted properly. Make sure the switches on the score motor are adjusted as it turns. Verify fuse values and that none are blown. That should get you close. Hope it helps. Make sure to unplug before Doing any of it.

Im in the process of making these flashlights and I use white pushbuttons instead of the lights you use. I find them rather clumsy. My question is do you connect the resistor board to 3,3 Volts or to 5Volts ? There is a wire from the PSU that holds 3.3 Volts. Maybe I can use that. So how did you connect the resistor board ? Thanks in advance.
@MRNBricks
@MRNBricks 2 ай бұрын
Honestly, I think it would depend on the hardware you’re using. It’d be difficult to say exactly how to wire it without seeing the exact hardware. The voltage would depend on the input required for your set up.

LED is always the right choice - last longer, less heat, less power draw, less stress on your machine. If you really want the old school incandescent yellow look, you can get LED bulbs that look like that. But personally I prefer games to be bright and colorful, not yellow and dim.

Yeah but happens if they didn't get it directly from Lego and it's not already in a brown box like that? I've read some people have received just the lego box with the shipping label slapped on it. That's the main reason I've stayed away from it. Idk if they just got unlucky or not but I would be pissed if I ordered a set and instead of it being in a box, it was just the Lego box with stickers all over that when you pull off will tear the box up.
