Why did you push the inserts past being flush or just slightly below? Shouldn’t the epoxy be able to hold even if it’s not touching the bottom lip?

You’re correct. Installing them flush with the wood would be ideal. I’m a little paranoid because I’ve had some pop up while the glue was setting in the past and sit proud of the wood. Not a good situation. So, I stick them down a bit and fill it with clear. Some of these got stuck a little low, though.
