The episode that starts at 2:02 is exceptionally beautiful, and the piano really helps to bring out the notes colliding into one another, and the close writing with the parts all in the same range wandering around each other--the percussive quality of the piano is great for this passage in a way the organ is not.

BWV has always been my favorite Bach organ-piece. Good to know that it might also has been Bach's favorite :) Well played!

This is perfectly suited to the piano but the original version for organ has the upper hand as far as sheer sorority goes. (Sorry, but I'm an organist !)

I was a former student of Tom's a long time ago. I read that he passed away in February of 2022, but the article didn't say what the cause was. That guy was an incredible pianist, teacher, person, etc. RIP. He will be missed.

Oh my word. Now that is how this piece should sound. I’ve been looking everywhere for a recording of the prelude that I actually like, other than the Netherlands Bach Society one. Turns out that the piano is the answer.

It,s original written for "organo pleno" but indeed , i like also this version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXWte4x3ost3gJo

Just heard that Mr. Labé passed away on 1-18-2022. This is by far my favorite rendition of Claire de lune. We are all fortunate enough to be blessed with this music and talent. Rest in peace.

I'm really sad to hear this, I discovered this version of Clair de lune maybe 14 years ago when I was trying to play it myself, and it has since become my all time favorite . I come back sometimes to listen to it, even if Mr. Labé is no longer there, his music will remain.

Beautiful hands, cultivated pianism, impressive synchronization on chords, elevated technical skills. The interpretation of this subtle and complex music work proves to be a great challenge for any pianist... This great composition of Debussy is a remarkable example of how different perspectives every interpret renders...

🎹 Oops...despite his impressive virtuosity and the Lisztian paraphrasing... the Maestro frequently fails to bring out the MELOS (I. E. the melody line) which gets buried amid the busy accompaniment. 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹

It's good, but it's not magical. The sonority is too sharp for this piece, and the effect is not very convincing..

A compositional and interpretative masterpiece ... my opinion is that no organ interpretation can match this admirable performance. I firmly believe in the expressive superiority of the piano (crescendo, accentuation, softness, elegance and immeasurable sensuality.) Thanks and the most vivid compliments to the performer Thoman Labe.
@rogernichols11245 ай бұрын
The expressive sorority of the piano is a given but the brilliance of Bach's contrapuntal writing is what carries this work through. Both versions, I'm sure, would have been acceptable to Bach but he would have found the piano sound challenging. Don't forget, the organ was his lifetime's means of expression and I would in preference listen to the organ version to this (admittedly brilliant) translation.

Carlo
