As a man who has replaced dozens of Duramax glow plugs, I would NEVER bring a power/air tool even within shouting distance of a stuck glow plug. You are asking to break it off. Even using an air chisel "lightly" like this makes me viscerally cringe. One wrong move and its all over. I tell people all the time, all you need is a warm engine, and plenty of proper penetrating oil. I've never found a power tool even remotely necessary even on the most rusted of glow plugs.

Thanks for a very helpful video. One thing I would add is replacing fuel lies while your there. I found mine to be brittle and cracked. Quite possibly my leak. 1/2 in straight regular fuel line worked great.

Thank you for the video. Changed out both thermostats on my 2003 LB7 and now I wonder why i waited so long to do it! Nice to have heat again and your video inspired me to just get it done.

On the second winter, they are still working out great! They do have some wear on them but they still work very well in all conditions, including snow

Yes, but it must be removed from the inside. It's less likely to be the source of the leak but still a possibility.

how do you know what side? or do you just do both sides every time?

You may be able to detect it with a scan tool, but an oscilloscope can also be used to graph the ouput. Chances are if one side is giving grief, the other side is not far behind

I have a 2016 chevy 3500 that I think the abs is activating when braking and acting like a really bad warped rotor, it will not do it all the time, I will clean the sensor and hope it fixes it.

My skid lights came on with my 2002 Toyota Sequoia yesterday at 55mph followed by what felt like the ABS kicking in without my foot hitting the brake & zero braking pressure. Is that sensation what people are calling "KICKBACK?" My ABS light did not light up on the dashboard nor did the check engine light, so I might start with this. Hopefully the speed sensor is as easy to access as shown in this video as I need to replace the pads & rotors anyway.

If the thermostats are not working and the engine does not come up to operating temperature, it will lead to many issues beyond simply not having heat. A diesel engine requires heat for combustion and an engine running cold will not run properly, especially on a newer truck with emission systems. The emissions systems will not work properly if engine temperature is not as it should be

Caution, if you buy the Dorman rebuild kit, three screws are provided for the triangular flange plate that holds the primer plunger down to the filter head. Those new screws were too long and would not seat the triangular white plastic and metal retaining ring all the way down to the pillars (they bottomed out) on the top of the head. I ended up using the original three screws, which were a little bit shorter than the replacement screws. Everything else went fine.

Just curious, why does manufacturer repair manual say "don't use antiseize on glow plug threads". Also, why use "copper antiseize" instead of standard antiseize?

I suppose because people would put all sorts of stuff onto it and since they are glowing hot, it can worsen the situation in many cases.

Lol @ all the comments from people that watch Daves channel. The engine is staying in the truck so they cant cut a keyway, and even the almighty Dave has said that the pins breaking is actually a very rare problem. Internet warriors.

I don't think that the pins are a problem if the balancer is torqued to 250ftlbs. Some places are saying that cutting the keyway is a "must do" and a weak spot on the Dirtymax. I think that people either don't replace the one time use bolts or don't get a tool to prevent the engine turning. It's a shame that the balancer has to come off to replace the water pump.

The water pump must have been replaced recently. And someone probably didn’t torque the harmonic balancer with a new lubricated bolt to 74 ft lbs plus 105 degrees. Which ends up to 325 to 390 ft lbs. Just relaying the info.

My guess is its been off at some stage but not replaced bolt or torqued properly as i bet its done couple hundred thousand miles, if the pin was no good it wouldn't last this long

We solved the root problem and performed a proper repair given the situation. I wouldn't put a warranty on it if I didn't trust it.

Since the crankshaft is still in the engine, there is no good way to cut a keyway accurately. We have to balance the best way to repair with the budget of the customer.

Bat fix is to machine a keyway in the gear and crankshaft and do away with the pins or you could always get it together and tack it with a rig welder but Dave’s automotive builds a lot of duramax motors and they machine the keyway on every one they build

We do the same thing when it comes to any repair where the crank is out of the block.
