When my parents moved to Swindon in the early 1990's, my grandma went to see and she thought that we were living near a chemical plant e.g the link centre 😂.

Owned by Telecential which were taken over by KPN Comtel/ Coventry Cable than NTL and now Virgin Media. That is one journey I have been through. Areas covered Wiltshire, Berkshire/ Reading and surrounding areas Oxfordshire, Warickshire/ Coventry and Surrounding areas, Northamptonshire, small parts of Hertfordshire and Dacorum Hemel Hempstead. It was expensive compared to the big 4 operators at the time Telewest, Nynex, Bell Cablemedia and International Cabletel, the latter taking over KPN Comtel over to become NTL. RIP Ashley Heath.

Good to see this video. I was trying to remember what was at Greenbridge before. I can remember going to Greenbridge retail park in 1997 and I think, and I can also remember going to the circus at Greenbridge when it was waste land, this must have been 1995ish but I couldn't remember what was there before.

Brilliant video Paul. You, and the other viewers, may be interested to know, my layout has three class 47s, in the GWR brunswick green, for the 150th anniversary of the GWR in 1985. 47484, 47500, and 47628. Although my layout is set in Lanarkshire, I can tell you, those three GWR 47s did visit Scotland, from time to time. In fact, all three visited Inverness, and for two days in 1986 and two days in 1988, all three were in Scotland at the same time! Was god's wonderful railway trying to spread its wings! One other thing, one of the last contracts for Swindon, before closure, was to refurbish some class 411 EMUs, southern region code 4CEP, in preparation for the Hastings - Tunbridge Wells electrification in 1986. These units were repainted as well, and gave another 20 years service. All in all, a very interesting video, on a long gone, but not forgotten, piece of railway history. Many thanks, from a railway enthusiast in Fife! Oh, and, please, subscribe to my KZbin channel if you wish!

I had cable in Northampton in 1986, basically 3 itv regions, plus sky channel and super channel. It wasn't fantastic, but it was better than just using the aerial (just)

@@loosesurfer Plenty of great looking places situated near to Swindon include Oxford, Cheltenham, Bath, Salisbury & Reading. Even out of town centre shopping areas such as The Designer Outlet & Orbital Shopping Centres in Swindon are great. It is simply the town centre itself that looks dreary & neglected with all its closed shops & new development builds going on such as the proposed new bus station.

I remember Sandfords DIY. I lived in Wootton Bassett as a kid. I also remember a grass verge planted with daffodils spelling out spring has sprung. This was on the duel carriageway before Sandfords. The Anchor butter factory was also near here. It's strange what you remember from your childhood. If I remember right the butter factory was a mustard yellow colour.

Swindon had gone the way of so many towns, crackheads and drunks. I was shocked to see the decline on my recent visit . The councils have a lot to answer for .

Locos and trains now built in Italy and Spain whilst this site is now used to sell clothes made in sweatshops, skilled men replaced with fast food staff on minimum wage . The only positive is that a lot of buildings are still there. Its very sad.

Thank you Paul and team for a great video. Really enjoyed watching this. I grew up around Swindon in the 80s and 90s. We loved it. I haven’t visited the town centre in 30 years, but will go back. Despite the inevitable changes (good and bad), I still only have good memories of Swindon now. Thank you

the most underground/unspoken kate bush vid there is. kate doing the very first release of satellite televisions existence in the uk. not to mention this being recorded in swindon which was the testing town for it with residents given access, at this stage it was only a couple of american channels that played at early hours of the morning in the uk and was the first time british people started to see television from other countries, it was terrible to begin with but progressed it is now the biggest media company in europe now the majority of family households have sky and it is the reason we have worldwide news. absolutely insane rabbit hole and no one seems to know about it lol
