I like how the film changed Rebecca’s death to being an accident rather than a murder. The unnamed heroine doesn’t deserve to be married to a murderer; it makes the novel quite unsettling. Here you actually root for their relationship because Maxim proves himself to still be a good enough person in the end and they finally have a truly loving marriage which will clearly survive the loss of Manderley. Also, I feel like having Maxim be guilty of murder sucks all the suspense out of the ending. In the novel, we hope Maxim will be found out and put in jail. But in the film, the stakes are much higher because he is innocent, meaning if Favell convinces the authorities that it was murder, Maxim will go to jail for something he didn’t do.

Before walking away from the window, Mrs. De Winter should’ve slapped Mrs. Danvers. She never once stands up to Mrs. Danvers and it makes the climax extremely unsatisfying because all the focus shifts onto Maxim and off of the crucial conflict between the two women.

God, this is such a fine film. Olivier is absolute perfection, every line, every tone. Fontaine was also the perfect nameless wife. Such a lovely, lovely film.

The character of Ms. Van Hopper is that of a mean, overbearing, malicious social climber. She fawns on those she wishes to impress and treats with contempt anyone who is below her social status. Van Hopper's awful manners are a foretaste of what is to come in the character of Ms. Danvers, who is not only vicious but unhinged. The story is set up to present the unnamed wife of DeWinter in a web of deceit and treachery, not of her own making.

What position was she in being married to Maxim?
@jackdempsey7169
@jackdempsey7169 3 жыл бұрын
The position Fontaine refers to is her former social position......that of the ordinary people. She had been a paid companion for Ms. Hopper. Here she is in the social caste of being high in society and expected to be able to present herself and her husband in that light. In the story, she knew this from the beginning, but Maxim tells her that she will fit in perfectly......not an honest appraisal of what was expected of her. That is why Ms. Hopper in her cruel manner told her that she would never carry off the switch in lifestyle changes. I think the storyline is somewhat weak here by the author because Maxim (her husband) is not honest with her not only at this point but also in his refusal to tell her about the dark side of Rebecca and the grief she presented for everyone.

No matter what precautions Hitchcock and the creative team took, Judith Anderson must have been in some real danger when this scene was filmed. Not to mention the terrible heat she must have endured.
