Shoulder in is completely different from haunches in. Shoulder in is equal to leg yield. Haunches in is equal to the half pass. I think that's what you said, good video.

This works. Lateral work creates straightness and balance, not the other way around. Watch foals. They're like little bumper cars. They make no distinction between forward sideways backwards upwards. Our aim as trainers must be to return that exhuberant Joy in Movement to every horse we touch.

Rode with Dominique years ago. Learned the work in hand from him. It is indispensable. Must say, Dominique's charisma outstripped, in my experience, , his horsemanship. However, I can tell you from direct experience rehabbing horses refered almost exclusively by veterinarians, doux piaffer is as close to a panacea -- especially for a lateralized canter--as exists in any discipline of horsemanship. And Barbier's transmission is pretty pure.

This is the way I was taught but I don’t see it in the championships but rarely. The judges are complicit in the degradation of the sport when they don’t severely fault the heaviness and sham rassembler. Too much ego and money in the sport now. I am glad I was in at the beginning of dressage in the USA. Much respect to Dominique Barbier, Jean Luc Cornille, and Jean Frossard for bringing correct Classical Dressage to the United States. I also shout out Bereiter Erich Zerban for teaching this system to me over 4 years, bringing my mare from green to Prix St Georg before he went back to Europe. I audited clinics with Jean Froissard and had the pleasure of riding in Jean Luc Cornille clinics. All were gentle and kind men who truly love and respect the horses for the generous teachers they are.

Paul Belasik has a marvelous discussion of 3-track vs. 4-track shoulder-in in the 3rd chapter of his book Riding Towards the Light. He discusses the history of shoulder-in of La Gueriniere vs. the modern 3-track put forward by Steinbrecht. Again, he provides a wonderful discussion of the benefits and drawbacks to each, essentially coming to a preliminary conclusion of sorts that leg-yielding, La Gueriniere's shoulder-in, and the modern 3-track shoulder-in are "simply a continuum of lateral exercises." He goes on to say that the horses he has trained go through all these stages (and many in between). But then, when you are starting to have some comfort in a resolution of the debate, he pulls the rug out from under you, exposes another paradox, and offers that in the end he found that his "awareness had to focus on feeling the horse under [him]....when the bending was too much and was killing forward impulse, or when there wasn't enough bend and the horse was just lying on [his] hands." And then: "The rider cannot separate the concept of a lateral exercise from the actual lateral riding, or she will begin to get an image in her mind of what a correct lateral movement should look like. A correct lateral movement is a matter of feeling. What is even worse for those who must pin it down, is that a correct lateral movement may change. Since it is a gymnastic exercise, what is good for the horse one day may not be good enough in a few weeks. The rider has to be careful not to strangle the movement by some conceptualisation which determines forever the exact placement of footfalls or exact angulation."

Lost me in the first minute. So rude and abrupt in manner towards the horse. You get the horse to work FOR YOU not WITH YOU. I hope you come back as a horse and understand how it feels to be pushed around rather than to be asked to move, THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Rally impressed by the story of the "rescue" horse. Is he living now? How common is it for breeding facilities to send horses to slaughter if they don't answer some sort of requirement?

Honored to several years ago, ATTEND A DEMONSTRATION, OF Mr. DominiqueBarbier riding peoples varied Horses. Loose Gentlemanly talk with Wonderful , Timely releases and impressive (TO ME) results in a few strides with move and return to the movement minutes. Not surprizzzING ly, he did not impress attendees as professional like as he did said Horses. Some which apparently had never been subjected to a full shoulder in,, but maybe the timid rider never got done but maybe a shoulder fore.. He was not interested in techy terms ,at the meet, He winked said kinda the room was not ready , ''again privately. We all could learn a little about , never up never in. (GOLFING TERM)) from folks that have demonstrated GET'R DONE , with horses seemingly capable of improving WITHOUT UNDUE FORCE. My Compliments to the Sponsor from Florida. Respex, kenxqed

So take a horse ready to relax and work over the back ,make it excited and hollow so it's more aerobically fit than it's back is strong. lol Dogmatic rhetoric spoken with a euro accent goes farther than well trained horses in the cult of dressage.

I think it would be more helpful if the trainer were on a horse with weak shoulders and a weak back more like the horses his students and viewers are struggling with. This gray is so strong and well trained... The rest of us will be struggling with horses that don't want to do the movements we are asking for... That situation would be

I work with different methodology perhaps but this is gold. We can train differently but keep the core of it. This video just clicked it for me why so many people seem to have problems lunging their horses. And also how to make my own work better and be more deliberate about the visualization.

No less than Steinbrecht advised against so called 4 track. The benefit of shoulder in is that the inside is hind placed under the centre of gravity of the horse and has to carry the whole weight on that leg. Steinbrecht postulated that you bend the hind legs one at a time. Ie do SI on each rein. This results in haunches that are conquered and enables true collection
