Paul Belasik has a marvelous discussion of 3-track vs. 4-track shoulder-in in the 3rd chapter of his book Riding Towards the Light. He discusses the history of shoulder-in of La Gueriniere vs. the modern 3-track put forward by Steinbrecht. Again, he provides a wonderful discussion of the benefits and drawbacks to each, essentially coming to a preliminary conclusion of sorts that leg-yielding, La Gueriniere's shoulder-in, and the modern 3-track shoulder-in are "simply a continuum of lateral exercises." He goes on to say that the horses he has trained go through all these stages (and many in between). But then, when you are starting to have some comfort in a resolution of the debate, he pulls the rug out from under you, exposes another paradox, and offers that in the end he found that his "awareness had to focus on feeling the horse under [him]....when the bending was too much and was killing forward impulse, or when there wasn't enough bend and the horse was just lying on [his] hands." And then: "The rider cannot separate the concept of a lateral exercise from the actual lateral riding, or she will begin to get an image in her mind of what a correct lateral movement should look like. A correct lateral movement is a matter of feeling. What is even worse for those who must pin it down, is that a correct lateral movement may change. Since it is a gymnastic exercise, what is good for the horse one day may not be good enough in a few weeks. The rider has to be careful not to strangle the movement by some conceptualisation which determines forever the exact placement of footfalls or exact angulation."

No less than Steinbrecht advised against so called 4 track. The benefit of shoulder in is that the inside is hind placed under the centre of gravity of the horse and has to carry the whole weight on that leg. Steinbrecht postulated that you bend the hind legs one at a time. Ie do SI on each rein. This results in haunches that are conquered and enables true collection
