heroes lost or got knocked out a whole lot more in the bronze age

Wasn't the arm gizmo tracker thing just a ploy so Jackal could get a DNA sample of Peter? That would make it seem like Conway had his whole story planned out in advance. But he probably had Jackal later say he got Peter's sample the same time he got Gwen's. Oh well.
@SonofNimrodIdiot3 сағат бұрын
In these stories, I would assume it means he got a sample when he had Peter unconscious at the start of this one. He had Peter knocked out in a lab, perfect opportunity. You know, it would work fantastic as a misdirect to keep Peter off the scent, to have put this on him and this comically silly "lead me to Spider-Man" scheme... but Gerry Conway has said all of this was on the fly. He knew who Jackal was going to be but anything involving the clones or Gwen were never planned. The Gwen clone only came into existence because Marvel were still getting bags of letters demanding Gwen's return so Stan told Gerry to just bring her back somehow and so we got a clone (which he later gleefully retcons away a decade later, and then retconned Carrion and kept retconning all the clones away as being actors). Later, in the 90s, we learn Miles Warren had made at least one Peter Parker clone by this point, so he supposedly had a sample already.

They never gave up on Vance. He was around a long time before finally getting a book that clicked. Quasar was like that also, right?
@SonofNimrodIdiot7 күн бұрын
Well, Vance has the weird added novelty that there's two versions of him and at any time one of those two versions is in play (and some times both are). The main reality version of Vance didn't even really become a proper character until this run, before he had only appeared in conjunction with his "future self". And after this series wrapped, he didn't make any appearances until New Warriors. And by this point, the Guardians were dormant too. Both New Warriors and Valentino's Guardians launched at the same time (I remember the John Byrne Marvel Age cover with Spidey and Namor and Ghost Rider and Robocop). In truth, I would've said they gave up on either version of Vance before New Warriors brought him back. Quasar was a bit of a ripple, introduced at the tail-end of 1977 most his appearances are within the space of a few years - the key ones being Gruenwald/Macchio Marvel Two-in-One - but he was then mostly absent for the bulk of the 80s. Gruenwald was trying to get a solo series off the ground but Quasar's only appearance following Marvel Team-Up Annual #5 (1981) is in an issue of Hulk that Gruenwald pencilled. Wasn't until Avengers #302 that Quasar resurfaced and Quasar #2 explains his absence as being when he was off in-space searching for the origin of his Quantum Bands.

I didn’t think Byrne was on the comic that long. Looking it up it appears he took a break after the first 13 then came back for 19-22. Was this the most notable thing Carlin did at Marvel?
@SonofNimrodIdiot7 күн бұрын
Carlin's only major credits without Gruenwald anywhere near are some issues of Dazzler, one of which I've read and reviewed and it was quite honestly appalling, and some fill-in issues earlier in this series when Thing was on Battleworld which I've not read and only found out while editing this. He also wrote that one Marvel Team-Up issue where Aunt May becomes Galactus' Herald called the Golden Oldie. He co-wrote some of Ka-Zar (the 80s series) with Bruce Jones. I think those are his only full stories without Gruenwald listed anywhere in the credits. Otherwise there's those 5 issues of Cap he wrote but those are even more clearly Gruenwald than these issues of Thing are. They swapped titles on the book because after 5 issues they decided that was more accurate to what has happening (Mark says so in a Mark's Remarks from 1992 I think it was, when he was celebrating his 100th issue as writer). On the other hand, Carlin's time editing Superman is enough of an accomplishment that who cares if his actual writing is a mix of disaster and flaccid. Everything from Byrne to Superman Blue came from his desk. Triangles didn't last long after his departure.

Were I to give you any advice, it would be to not re-read it and rather re-read something good instead. Though, the ending of Druid is pretty funny with Hellstrom literally pissing on his corpse. Actually, I take that back, the existence of that Druid series is funny overall. The idea that Hellstorm was cancelled and Marvel thought "well, let's replace it with a new ongoing title in the same style but with a character even less appealing than Daimon Hellstrom". Famously, Druid was historical as the first Marvel comic that was already cancelled before it hit the stands. Many would follow suit in the years that have followed.
@markshulusky66807 күн бұрын
I hate the whole "retconning/catfishing" plot substitution technique. Life, real life, isn't complex and interesting because of endless series' of surprise reveals, foundational changes and switchbacks. It's in how people react and deal with the same things in new ways over time; how they may change (or not). Life is in the living and retcons aren't that, it's scrapbook editing- adding new pictures to replace the old ones you never look at anyway. BTW: Is Serifa back to being albino? I don't have an albino fetish (although Nekra in her first DD appearances was a great character, along with Mandrill- review THAT Steve Gerber story) but for her it seemed to have meaning.
@SonofNimrodIdiot7 күн бұрын
I really do want to re-visit that Nekra/Mandrill/Black Specter story, I read it long before I really know Steve Gerber and breezed through it as "one of those Daredevil stories where stuff is finally happening and someone has ideas". I don't own it, I'll try and find those issues - it might take ages to or it might take weeks - I do want to see it again. Saripha never appeared again after the first issue of this series when Daimon killed the demon she had married. She left slapping him in the face and call him a heartless dick. She was still not coloured correctly and now her name was even misspelt in the issue. Her being a Wiccan - which is a pretty interesting character trait - was never even mentioned. She showed up in #1, for the same reason as the demon from Defenders #118 or Gabriel the Devil-Hunter - because the person who came up with the plot (Kurt Busiek) wanted to show-off how much of a "fanboy" he supposedly is because he can remember all these things from comics that we forgot about and then he tears that sort of stuff down to make himself look better.

@@apilgrim8715 That would likely be design work by Scott Johnston... he is meant to be Marvel's "art director" but now it just entails corporate design work. Mobile games, merchandising and absolutely nothing close to the actual comics. He seems unfulfilled so he'll decide to insert random new design elements into a character's model on what is official merchandise so you end up with a bunch of action figures or games with character designs that have embellishments that aren't even something they've worn in comics (and then a few years later, they make it into comics because all the merchandising have Wonder Man with red bands around his biceps or Black Knight with a loin cloth).
