I agree wholeheartedly with all of this. I've always found it odd when writers reset things or try to make it like the Silver Age again because then they start adding their own stuff on top of that which doesn't work at all with the reverence for the Silver Age. And then Byrne's arrogant desire to "fix" things is reverting them to extreme caricatures of what the were in the Silver Age. Aunt May, the way she is utilised, is my sticking point. You bring her back from the dead, you should make it worthwhile, you've got to prove to people it was a good idea to bring her back and all they do is have her be useless and constantly be a burden to Peter. Jameson and Flash also suffer from similar characterisation. Betty Brant is transformed into Lois Lane. Mary Jane is always "away" on modelling assignments but also always there whenever Peter Parker is "away" on Spider-Man stuff so both can freely complain about the other never being around. Then we have the traditional creepy Byrne thing where he has the married Peter Parker kiss a 15-year-old girl. Even the second book, whenever the stories are directly tied to or are continuing stuff from Amazing it is bad. They will sometimes do stand-alone issues or have their own little storylines or subplots and those bits are generally leagues above the Byrne plotting (still pretty average but better than Byrne and JrJr's art is still great back then, he was also being inked my Hanna who'd been inking him since Clone Saga). If I remember, when Byrne gets bored and leaves, they just up Romita Jr to Amazing and for a while, a few months, he's doing art on both books. And also on Thor and maybe Hulk at that point.

Yep, you'll notice a lot of the comments on my Moondragon videos refer to "rap with an e". KZbin have a few words that are automatically filtered or blocked when left in comments, that is one of them (inconsistently though). A word beginning with N and every possible variation of it is another one that won't post. The one beginning with F that is an insult to gay people, I think there's a few slurs like that. Even saying fuck sometimes gets it automatically filtered. I am unsurprised that there is yet another sexual abuse story in comedy. Almost every comedian you've ever heard of is usually either guilty of or has enabled it. Whenever you see comedians gather together on podcasts, it is usually the case one of them has done a rap with the e and the others know it or have also done one of their own. The comedians who only appear infrequently as guests on a podcast, who don't seem part of the clique, the ones or who are off almost in their own corner are the ones that are most likely not the scumbags. I would say, from my personal experience, never trust any comedian ever. Even if he's your best friend, he's probably done something dodgy or knows about something and hasn't done anything about it.

@ No,I wouldn’t under those conditions, but if I were a writer fabricating a scenario I’d expect to be bopped on the nose for taking such an easy out.

The P. Craig Russell inks worked best with his work (it's just a shame that they were very inconsistent with detailing). The issue inked by Tom Palmer was crazy but barely resembled Ditko anymore.

I do have the X-Man issue. I don't have the Cap one (understandably). The X-Man one actually has some of the most direct depictions of the mother/son incest in the whole series.

I will have already highlighted my theory before - it's all Namor's fault. Byrne saw McFarlane and Liefeld selling a million copies and he thought to himself that he was obviously capable of that. He was honestly expecting Namor #1 to sell a million copies largely based on Byrne's name alone and it fell dramatically short of that. That'd also be why he very quickly stopped caring on Namor, why none of his set-up or ideas went anywhere, why he barely even explored the notion of Namor as a corporate businessman. The stories were all just disposable nothing that Byrne could find the effort to muster (what does Super-Skrull as Iron Fist in the Savage Land REALLY have to do with Namor?). Then he stopped drawing them and the scripts got worse, then he stopped scripting them and the plots got worse, then he stopped plotting them and the whole thing was by then a complete mess. Everything he did after that was bitter and noticeably driven by how much power the editor(s) would give him.

Yeah, the writing and plotting of this is real piss. For all the effort it takes to zap Hulk back to WWI, they do almost nothing with him there.

@@SonofCapwolf Yes, but too dark. Everything was too dark and the inking was sloppy. Marvel’s reprint series’ used to do copies as good as the originals (early Marvel Tales reprinting Spider-Man were perfect, even a slightly larger size like old comics) but in the mid 70s the decline in quality started and didn’t stop until it reached rock bottom.

A lot of the old magazines were like that, even the ones starring Iron Fist and Dracula. They were almost unrelated to the colour comics.

I know Frank Thorne did some art in Wrath of the Spectre. I don't think he did much outside of Conan and Red Sonja.

@ He did a lot of work in black and white magazines. He had a series Ghita (Ithink) in some Warren mag, and I have an issue of Devilina from Atlas (the 70s company) with his art in it. He was quite a character, worth looking up on Wikipedia or KZbin.

I wish. More expensive. These were cheap but generally more expensive. I've said before, the $1 comics they put out - the reprints - were almost the equivalent of $2 for us.

The Savage Axe of Ares was the one-shot. It was B&W anthology type starring Ares over the course of human history. Title obviously being a play on the old The Savage Sword of Conan B&W magazine they did.
