@@kcsunshine6416 Thank you!! And man, I WISH!! Love my brother to pieces, but getting him to build the hives was…ummmm…not easy. Hahahaha!!! It’s not his favorite thing. He did it purely for the love of his nagging sister (me). Of course I’m incredibly thankful to him, and having so much patience with me as I was very particular about the hive build (needing to have certain aspects such as the “bee space,” the amount of space under the hives for the trays, and more. I am the designer of the hive, but my brother helped me take that and make it real). If you’d like an overview of the hives, I do a hive tour in the second video posted, but just a heads up, I will be doing a follow up video on things I learned and aspects that were changed in the newer hive bodies. did you have to make a queen excluder frame or how do you put in an excluder?
@LuckyCrownHoney5 ай бұрын
Hey @jhippl , thanks for asking! So they make queen excluders that can just slide in between the frames, and sit there. They can also be cut down to fit the hive measurements. But if I were to do it, I would likely modify my follower board with a cut out in it, and place a cut out piece of the queen excluder in that hole. It wouldn’t be too hard to do, I think. However, with this particular hive, you’re not supposed to NEED a queen excluder. The way I understood it was they would naturally lay their brood near the entrance, and it would slowly phase out to honey frames farther from the door. This is a learning journey with these hives for me, and so far, I have not found this to be true. I have 20 frames currently in this hive, 4 undrawn, maybe 2 with just resources (nectar/honey/pollen), and all the rest is brood frames. So that’s about 14 frames of brood, from the door all the way to the end. 😅 I have a very productive queen. It doesn’t look like I’ll get much honey this year. Being that I’m a new beekeeper, and I’m also new to these hives, I’m giving myself at least 2 years (seasons) to learn them first before adding a queen excluder
