First Circle is a excellent album period underrated in my opinion

I saw these guys in Denton, maybe '79, what a show; afterwards they jammed a bunch of Beach Boys tunes! The cats at NTSU were mesmerized. It was Lyle's homecoming.

This is my favorite group of recordings in Pat Metheny group’s repertoire. I’ve traveled on business for years and this is my favorite (all of Still Life Talking) to listen to on the road.

Amazing these guys just threw this in as a nod to what critics at the time might call "real jazz" - i.e. the kind of jazz these guys weren't playing, and by inference "couldn't" play. I saw the group do this a year or two before this in Providence RI, and though I was utterly blown away by all their originals, when they did this it convinced the "jazzer" in me that these guys were the real deal, even beyond. A lifetime of inspiration for me.

Perhaps, the best composition of the Pat Metheny Group. It's gorgeous! 36 or 37 years after the album's release, it still makes my hair stand on end.

This is exactly how it was the first time I saw them. Huge snow storm and only like 50 people at the club. It was incredible! Jaws stuck to the floor, I left saying wtf the did I just witness haha. I'll never forget when this disc first came out...I had a roommate who turned me onto Pat Metheny....he was a jazz piano major. He bought the disc "First Circle" and played "Forward March". I obviously knew it was a kind of joke, but my roommate suddenly became quite depressed...had the "Pat Metheny Group" really fallen to such a new low...actually, when you hear "Forward March", you can tell that the guys, as much as they try to sound terrible, they do a pretty good job playing terribly,...you can tell they are real virtuosos just playing around. In any case, after hearing "Forward March", by buddy was considering returning the disc...yes, just after one track. I was thinking to myself,...OK,...come on now, we know these guys are a real kickass group....so, I knew this was a spoof. In any case, "Yolanda" came on next, and my best buddy just did a very happy jig all over the room,...dancing to Yolanda....I'll never forget that. I couldn't stop laughing. He truly was soooooo happy!!! ...me too... A great song, indeed....but I always think of that particular moment when my friend was about ready to return the disc. Oh well....!

In the 80’s I had a small apartment and lived by myself and every night I’d turn on KMOD radio station and listen to music as I slept. One night I was almost asleep and Yolanda You Learn came on and after the song finished the DJ said that was Yolanda You Learn from Pat Metheny and I jumped up grabbed a pencil and wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget. Next day I went out and booth everything I could from Pat Metheny and have been listening to him every since. Can’t wait for the Boulder Theater concert In October ❤
