This is so beautiful. William Warfield's voice is so perfect and emotional and expresses so much raw feeling about life itself. One of the most lovely and rich and wonderful songs in any musical in any era. One of the best of the best of the best. It was a complete privilege to listen to him sing this song.

This was a legendary one-take. The studio was set and the musicians were hired for the entire day just to record this song. What you're hearing was the first and only take. It was just supposed to be a run-through to check mic placements and elevations, levels, etc. After they finished, the conductor went into the booth and he said it was taking forever, then he saw someone pick up the phone and was on it a couple minutes. He said he was sure he was getting fired. Lo and behold, Louis B. Mayer comes into the studio and goes straight into the booth. Six minutes later, he walks right back out. Bill thought he was fired, for sure. Before he could think about it any more, someone said, "That's a take," and the studio went crazy. At the world premiere, there was such applause after that performance that they had to stop the movie. Warfield was also one of the finest human beings ever to walk the Earth.

My Dad had this sung at his funeral. He said we should find a big black man to sing it so it was like the original. Unfortunately we weren’t able to find a man who fit that description, but it was sung.

This is up there with Paul Robeson's rendition, Robeson's is the one that really hits home.
