I love the good things about owning a pet, but I do hate the bad parts. My dog has been with me 18+ years and despite receiving the greatest of care, today she is in really bad shape and needs 24-hour care. I almost always wake up twice a night to check up on her. I have been advised to put her to sleep, but I don't have the heart to do that but if she continues to suffer eventually, I will have to make that decision. I just want to advise everyone, to make sure they understand and know what they are getting themselves into. Most people are just not aware of the challenges and difficulties faced in addition to the expenses involve with not owing a pet, or better stated raising one. It is similar to raising a child for life. I recently went to the animal shelter to drop off an abandoned dog I found on the street, and they flat out refused to take him. They were simply overwhelmed at the record number of pets left to fend for themselves. It really broke my heart to hearing that information. Thank God I was able to find someone who was willing to adopt him but imagine those other dogs that were not so fortunate. Owning pets should be regulated and families need to be trained so that they can become aware of the issues they will be facing in the future before bringing home a pet. In my opinion an income threshold should be considered before purchasing a pet for this reason low-income families should not be allowed to owned animals because the long-term costs are simply unsustainable, and it is just one reasons why we have an over population of homeless animals.
