Right now it feels like people are only talking positively about this camera because their favourite content creators and/or brand is under fire. This lens has 0 lenses which benefits the size of the body which is only marginally smaller and lighter than its competitors. It offers nothing of value that would be a noticeable improvement over using a smartphone as your 2nd or 3rd choice camera. It’s considered for content creators with no option of external audio and ridiculous record limits. All these people saying I’ll use it for projects and work. Update me after you’ve actually used it and it’s overheated constantly during your shoot and ruined your “projects”

There are 3 kinda small lenses from Sigma for L-mount. And in 2 days Samyang is going to announce their first lens for L-mount, but I kinda feel it will be 35-150 F2-F2.8 one :D. And some of the creators where heavily attacked in the comments, but seems most of them removed offensive comments from under their videos :D

This is for the people who shoot media content for brands, for those who want to sell their photos quickly in a event, for those with deadlines that need to shoot, edit and create and share a week of content to an agency in 1 hour... This is for those who value a 2X - 3X faster than the traditional editing workflow.... Where photographers going around taking photos, which are automatically transferred to their phones and they either quickly apply LR presets or do quick LR edit on their phone/tablet. I have two relatively expensive cameras. I upgraded G85 to G9II and I have X100V from time before it become popular. I went from GF1->G5->G85-G9II. GF1 with 20mm/f1.7 lens was great, I liked it, but it was unfortable to use with bigger lens. G5 and especially G85 are much better when it comes to ergonomy. But then I realized I took the most photos with GF1 and I do not enjoy using G85. So Fuji is something like huge upgrade to GF1 after 11 years and I don't regret buying it. G9II is much more versatile, but it's not something I carry without intention to take some photos. But this camera? I don't really know. Fullframe with kit lens that has F8, what? What's the purpose? Camera without grip? At least it has texture, but I don't know - that's what I disliked about GF1. 25cm minimal focus distance? X100V has ... i don't know - maybe 10cm or less, it's quite good for close ups. Preset LUTs? Yeah, people like this on Fuji I guess. I guess it's not a camera for me. I assume it was released as something that may compete with X100VI, ticking it's two selling points: attractive camera with presets. Otherwise it seems strictly worse: no view finder, no ND filter, no leaf shutter for those who care, no grip, although there is already 3rd party accessory, no weather sealing. Actually ... since it has optional grip, it maybe makes sense, but I don't know the price. Other competition might be Ricoh. But being MFT fan, I'd like to see GX9II and reworked 20mm/f1.7 lens which more flat.

The S9 is more or less for iPhone 14 & 15 users who want a style conscious filmmaking upgrade for TikTok and Shorts and the like. Does that market exist among the richest segments of the world population? We will see. For some it will be a play camera for travel and non-paid video. But it’s not a robust option as a primary camera. In a place like Poland it will be a rich kid holiday toy that ends up in the back of a closet. With that said, I do have a few use cases for the S9 in my world but only as a backup or BTS option.

Stick a mini gimbal on top of a monopod and you can get around a crowded room quite well-as long as the lighting is reasonable. I think it would be a great camera to use for quick turn around, behind the scenes filming. @@JoATTech The success or failure of Panasonic as a brand in video will probably come down to the Lumix Lab app. No one in the camera business has ever had a reliable and usable app for controlling their cameras and moving files. But from some of the unscripted demos I’ve seen posted from the streets of Japan, this Lab software seems to work quite well, and it opens up on-the-fly creative possibilities at a time when phones can have terabytes of storage. If it works well, then it won’t take long for the S5II series to get a Lab compatibility firmware update. Then you have a more capable camera with the same creative look-on-the-fly options, and then who knows. They could still carve out a solid niche in the market between the LUT capabilities and the crop flexibility of open gate. It’s still an underappreciated resource being able to crop verticals that look good without needing to re-rig the camera back and forth.

The S9 was such a tease. It looked like a FF GM1 with IBIS and a rotatable screen. Shame it was video focused. The unnecessary time limits make it only for sharing short video clips. The price suggests it should do more. I'm a loyal Panasonic m43 user and can admit when a camera missed the mark for photo and video. It may still sell very well and happy if it does. Until 2019 this 30 minute record limit has been artificially forced due to stupid EU camcorder tariff. And it's been repealed in 2019. But camera corpos as always didn't care for older models, so just new models got the limit removed. Also they were to lazy to make 2 different (most of them) models one for EU market one for rest of the world without a limit. Now the limits are only due to overheating issues, or to cripple camera on purpose to not cannibalise the sales of better models. So it all depends how well S9 initially sells, and if there would be big enough pushback from users who will buy it without knowing this limitation. But so far there are quite a lot complains for it. Now it probably mostly depends on "Japan trip" youtubers. If they complain enough in their reviews maybe something will happen :D.

As for depth of field, the truth is nobody (in the audience) cares. If the shot is composed then it’s almost *better* to have everything sharp on frame anyway to avoid the possibility of autofocus missing. Besides, for the time being most folks were brought up on TV cameras which barely had any DOF, and phone footage likewise.

But GVM actually make the marketing case claiming their 650W bi-color light is as powerful as 600W daylight from competition. I've seen 5+ reviews on YT with this claim repeated over and over again. And actually in one of the reviews the reviewer measured 21600 lux (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGSQaHVqepykmsU) ... So they either lie on purpose about the output (I doubt it since there results above) or my unit is just different (older) model or it's broken.

Bi-color lights are usually only a little over b\half the strength of the monocolor version. So the results you're getting make sense. GVM probably wrongfully posted the results from a mono-color D version.

yes, this is true. Bi color lights will not have the same lux values as a daylight light. Thats not to say stop buying bi-color lights because youre not getting enough output, they will still get really bright because bi-color lights I have really come in handy but its something to keep in mind. If you want a DUMB bright light? Don't get it in a bi-color offering. Get it in daylight and buy some gels

Hmm interesting. I just got a GVM 650B used from B&H for $600, It did indeed come with the lens yours is missing. It seems super bright to me but I don't have a light meter and nothing to compare it to. I am able to expose a shot with a window in the background using a large softbox however the modifier has to be pretty close to the subject, basically as close as it can get without being in the frame.
@JoATTech
@JoATTech Ай бұрын
Do you have any curtains in the window or it's just fully transparent glass? I tried to do it with my GVM 650B and it's not possible. Tried today with Aputure 600D, and as you describe, softbox as close as possible but just out of the frame and it works like a charm even without any curtains in the window. (I had to use 5-6 stops of ND to have the window exposed correctly). So looks like your unit might generate full output (if you do not have any curtains). So for 600$ is a fantastic deal :D
@NickDelDuca

@@JoATTech No curtains just a bare window during the day. The window does not have direct sunlight. I will have to try it again with a larger window and see how well it does. Maybe I can make a video. I honestly haven't used the light much. I've only set it up twice. I tested it in my office the first day I got it against the window and I used it once for a photoshoot at a studio. At the studio I only had to use it at like 15% output though so that wasn't really a good test of it's capabilities. I just bought it because the price was so good and I figured I would eventually need it for something.

@@NickDelDuca Make a video, I want to see it :D I've tested GVM650B vs the window and Aputure 600D too. But the tests were during different time so it's hard to compare them. I would try to compare them both at the same times of the day. Once when I got direct sunlight in the window (but not Sun itself) and then later when the sun is only reflected from the sky and clouds. But based on what I've seen so far Aputure seems like ~1 stop brighter.

I have inspected closely the box the GVM 650B Pro been send in. And it got original GVM tape around it. Does not look like Amazon repackaged. It's is still possible it's amazon return since it was send from Polish warehouse which might be actually GVM owned. Or this might be a demo unit which they repurposed for sale. The scratches on the ballasts suggest it is not brand new, unless they do not have protective foil on the displays and the scratches are from the production process (I doubt it).

600x pro and 600c pro are also water resistant, but actually aputure gives a bit different rating for 600d pro (they say it's light rain resistant). Also ballasts for these lights share the same resistance as the heads. 600d pro ballast is also a charger for v-mount batteries ... not a case for 600d. And 600d pro got 0.1% increments while 600d just 1%. But DMX implementation is better for 600d (non-pro) :D

Amazon offering says with reflector it should have 81300lux at 1m, although I do not see this spec at GVM site. I measured something around 60k, do not remember exact number, for sure less than 65k. Aputure 600d with reflector generates 98500 lux at 1m, but with this ugly hotspot. Also aputure 600d at 1m without reflector generates 22150 lux. So 21000 lux for 650W bicolor is definitely spec without the reflector. If it is with reflector, than my amaran 300C output with reflector at 1m is 26580lux ... and it's RGBWW light.

No - bare light. They do not have readings with reflector on their site to compare. And 600W CoB with reflector generates 90k-100k lux at 1m with standard reflector - but it also depends on reflectors size and angle. So it's hard to compare different lights with different reflectors. The easiest is to compare bare bulb - one less factor.

@@CrimzonRX Same reflector will skew the results, because this GVM CoB is placed much more to the front than Aputure ones. GVM reflector got much longer "neck" to accommodate this longer CoB shape.
