So I'm confused, does Big Red have a decoder in her, and you can controller her on a DC track? I to have DCC++EX and DC, and like both equally.
@masticshortline15 сағат бұрын
Hi, Big Red is DCC-Ready, which means she runs on DC and can run DCC if I drop a decoder in. 2 of my mainlines run DCC-EX and one is still DC. Glad you like both systems.

You might like to also read my two responses. I explain DC wireless options (WiFi, Bluetooth and wireless. All forms of wireless radio controls.) and and DCC.
@johnwinter60613 күн бұрын
Throw in Radio controlled on DC power (seems to have disappeared), Wi-fi on DC and Bluetooth (a specific type of Wi-fi) on DC. You may find DC PWM will interfere with DCC decoders.
@masticshortline14 сағат бұрын
Hi, I don't seem to recall radio-controlled DC. Blunami (Bluetooth-enabled model trains) isn't Wi-Fi. DC PWM doesn't apply to locomotives with DCC decoders. You just operate DCC and don't bother going into Track Manager to switch to DC.
@johnwinter606112 сағат бұрын
@@masticshortline Please bear with me as I explain. RADIO CONTROLLED Been around for at least 20 years, if not longer. I bought some of mine that long ago. Technically any model train controlled by a wireless device (no matter what is powering the track or the type of wireless), is radio-controlled. Here's why: From Wikipedia. "Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology standard that is used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances and building personal area networks (PANs). In the most widely used mode, transmission power is limited to 2.5 milliwatts, giving it a very short range of up to 10 metres (33 ft). It employs UHF radio waves in the ISM bands, from 2.402 GHz to 2.48 GHz.[3]" and "The IEEE standardized Bluetooth as IEEE 802.15.1" (WiFi is IEEE 802.11x) From Britannica. "Wi-Fi is similar to Bluetooth in that it also uses radio waves for high-speed data transfer over short distances without the need for a wire connection. " From elsewhere: "Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet access. A common misconception is that the term Wi-Fi is short for "wireless fidelity," however Wi-Fi is a trademarked phrase that refers to IEEE 802.11x standards." RADIO CONTROLLED DC I've been running them for 20+ years on H&M DC 12V. For example: A. 3 x Ahern with a 1.5" x 2.5" remote with a wire sticking out of it. Eg Challenger. A radio wireless controller. No longer made. B. Lionel Polar Express. I have the original version with 'wireless remote'. A radio signal. They now make a 'Bluetooth' version. A different radio signal. Google Lionel Universal remote. (It's only universal to Lionel brand engines!) I also have a Bachmann with factory fitted DCC decoder GGG which runs on DC and still makes sounds, all without a remote. As the voltage is increased it goes through a pre-determined set of sounds. Engine sound on, lights on, bell on, horn blast, move off, bell off, engine sound only according to speed. ie no radio control but runs its DCC features automatically without DCC power, without DCC track signals and without any remote (radio / wireless / WiFi / Bluetooth) radio signal control. On DCC power with a DCC base, you can manually control the speed, sounds, etc. They ALL have DCC decoders in them and can run on DC powered track or DCC powered track. My choice. The engine decoders pick up the type of track power (DC or DCC) automatically and behave accordingly. Running DCC decoders on DC PMW is problematic. PMW seems to be the norm for DC controllers these days. No idea why. That's how I accidently got caught out - nothing on the box. Seems the PMW interferers with the DCC engine decoder. WiFi CONTROL (a form of radio control) ON DC Google 'LocoFi'. Read his arguments for using DC track power and wireless remote. They are the same arguments for Bluetooth. The main ones are: A. DC powered track is far cheaper. No need for expensive DCC base nor expensive additional DCC power packs. B. A radio signal is now more reliable than a track signal. C. Use your own mobile phone to control engines with free supplied software. No need for expensive DCC remotes (corded or wireless). BLUETOOTH v WiFI So as above, Bluetooth is a radio / WiFi signal. It is true that Bluetooth technology and WiFi can't be interchanged. But they are from the same wireless / radio control parent / family. The WiFi we mostly use is an Australian invention. Their main advantages are the same as the LocoFi. ME? I've ended up backing: DC track with DC engines only, DC track with (DCC) decoder and radio remote wireless, DC track with (DCC) decoder and voltage controlled features, DC track with Bluetooth DCC (Monocasy now gone), and finally DCC with Viessmann Commander. All over 12 mainlines! I have about 14 AMPS of DCC power and about the same in DC power. WHAT TO DO? Now you are up to speed, enjoy whatever suits you most. I don't think it's worth ditching one for the other. For those entering, Bluetooth may be VERY tempting. Just remember, you'll need the free software to match the brand/s you buy. Have as many brands as you wish! WHAT IS DCC POWER? DCC is neither AC (a sine wave with positive and negative swapping direction cyclically - Htz.) nor DC (no wave at all and no cycles. Just constant flow one way.). It's DCC. It allowed Mr Lenz (the inventor of DCC) to add a control signal to a power supply by varying the width of the rectangular wave (not AC sine waves), etc. Google that for more info.

How do I convert a loco to DCC?
@masticshortlineАй бұрын
Hi, Although I wired 2 mainlines for DCC-EX, I don't run DCC trains, and I don't wire locomotives for DCC operations. What I can tell you is that KZbin is full of videos on converting locomotives to DCC; look up The DCC Guy, Solo Contracting, and Scott Rails. Best of luck!
@JBG1968Ай бұрын
The motor mounts did actually come from the factory in the older pre flywheel models
@masticshortlineАй бұрын
I agree, but I've never seen any motor mounts colored green. Usually, they are an off-white color if in good condition and dark tan when they are goners. Thank you for your input, and Happy Holidays!
@VolfMarkАй бұрын
The factory used various colours of wiring to power the motor. It didn't matter which colour the wires were, the soldering orientation was based on what kind of truck the locomotive had and the position of the motor on the underframe, so only two possible combinations. This ensured that each locomotive would move in the same direction respecive to the same polarity applied. They did use single wires, which were just stripped at the place of soldering because it made it so much easier to solder a single piece of wire than to hold two separate ends and solder them together onto the same contact. So, it would require less time. Mehano motors truly were a hit or miss sometimes, but they were generally fit for their purpose and easy to maintain because of their design and easy access to commutator and brushes. If serviced regularly, they would last for decades. The Mehano models in my videos are over 30 years old and still run strong, most of them having that type of motor. Your 130 variant of motor may prove a bit too weak for powering and running that ALCO C--628 model with its massive lead weight, plus a consist. Check it regularly against overheating.
@masticshortlineАй бұрын
I appreciate your input. I agree with the hit-or-miss regarding the motors. So far the replacement motor appears to be working fine. Thank you again.

I had the same issue with a Walthers Proto GP-7. I just remove the wire and switch it around to run this engine. Can't run it with any other loco, but it's a great running piece so I left it alone. Can something be done to make it run correctly??
@masticshortline3 ай бұрын
One of two things could be the reason: 1. Walthers Proto poorly assembled the locomotive and Quality Control was out to lunch. 2. Walthers Proto misassembled the locomotive and QC was still out to lunch or was paid to look the other way. Did you buy the locomotive new or pre-owned? If pre-owned, then the previous owner must've done something to wind you up in your situation. Otherwise, it's QC asleep at the wheel. If you've managed to get it to run and it runs well, count it as a win. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by not being able to run with other locos. Thanks for stopping by!

When you remove one motor brush clip, the motor wont spin very well because there is just the one clip holding the motor together, therefore the motor is slightly not sitting together properly. If you were to squeeze together where the other clip goes,the motor will spin properly. As soon as you pop the other clip on, the motor will spin correctly.

It is a nice looking loco.... I would never have the power on a motor for that long if it is not spinning, you will cause damage to the windings.... I would have removed the motor from the chassis and cleaned it then put power to each brush to see if it was spinning.. then replaced it onto the chassis once it was working correctly.. then oil and grease all of the wheels and moving parts.. RE a 123 block why?.. if that is to hold the loco while you work on it why not just cut the centre out of a car wash sponge... or some other foam block etc.. Great to see it back on the tracks running once again.
