I really love this piece. It's everything Honstein says of it - it's cold and brittle and eerie and yet there's so much ethereal loveliness happening, as well. There's the calm and serenity of being well-stocked and snowed in. But there's also the frisson of uncertainty and maybe a little atavistic fear as a huge storm approaches and all bets are, suddenly, off. What will happen? And the waiting - for the baby to be born, for the endless cold and snow to stop, for Spring rain to wash away the dirty urban snow piles. It ought to be called "February" - because that's the month that makes you feel like winter is never going to relinquish its grip and you find yourself searching every twig on every tree for signs of budding, of quickening life. Beautiful.

Hi, thank you so much, but how can i make this change for the scale, not for the notes through the bars? please

Hey Farjo - do you mean just how to create a key signature with microtonal accidentals? If so, there is a way to select alternate characters for the accidentals outlined here: usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Finale2012Mac/Content/Finale/Nonstandard_key_signatures2.htm The key signature won't playback the microtones. The easiest way I know of to do that would be to play Finale through something like Logic, which does support alternate tuning system playback.

@@derik2nicolai584 It's possible to use the pitch wheel to do it (I think?) but it's not coordinated in a helpful way in Finale in-house. P.S. Dorico looks INCREDIBLE for microtonal notation, so I'd hop on that (I know I will!)

You can get around having to duplicate the shapes by assigning the shape to a meta-tool. Press Shift (mac??) and a key (like B) with the expressions tool selected will bring up the dialogue box. Clicking your shape will assign that shape to that key. Pressing that key to add that shape to the score will now allow that shape to be altered independently of all it's copies.

Chamber-sized works are my first love, but I see you've written orchestral-sized pieces too. Any chance of seeing any here on video?
@RobertHonstein7 жыл бұрын
Alas - It is much much harder to get video of orchestra pieces online - a very expensive and complicated process in most instances. I've written some orchestra music - not a ton, mostly due to available opportunities and not lack of interest - and there is audio for almost all of them on me website - www.roberthonstein.com . There are a few exciting orchestral projects in the works for the coming years, but that will take a little time for it all happen. In the meantime - I'll definitely be posting more solo and chamber music videos as I make them!
@curtbarnes42947 жыл бұрын
Oh, DUH--I should have realized that the blue type meant I could click on it! Great to hear-never mind seeing- on your website. Quite a treasure trove... Interesting how a work of visual art inspired you. Reminds me that Alex Mincek has been inspired by painting, dedicated a piece to Ellsworth Kelly. (I'm a painter myself)
@RobertHonstein7 жыл бұрын
yeah definitely! I'm totally get inspired by visual things. My string quartet Arctic was inspired by a photograph and a recent solo violin + electronic piece, Middleground was inspired by a painting.

Did this piece or "Conduit: I. Touch" on the Hand Eye record come first? I'm a masters student in composition and have been recently become very interested in your music by way of Conduit. Really enjoying hearing how it has transferred from one to the other!
@RobertHonstein8 жыл бұрын
Cullyn Murphy hey great question! Conduit came first. At one of the rehearsals 8bb was practicing just the string parts and I really liked how they sounded by themselves, so I pretty much used the string parts for 'touch' from conduit as the final movement to this piece. There are some modifications, of course: orchestration and then the end gets expanded a bit so it works better as a final movement (as opposed to touch, which is a first movement)
