Tank slappers can cause the pistons in the brake calipers to back out. Gravity Cavity at Road Atlanta taught me that.

If it's a proper high speed tank slapper you wont have control of the throttle because you can barely hold the bars so if somebody tells you to give it a burst of throttle that is not going to happen, even if that's what your thinking, it's just not possible, I would suggest letting go of the bars and guiding the bike with the lower part of your body, you could just rest your elbows on the tank and clamp yourself onto the bike and shift your weight to guide it, if you have never experienced a full on tank slapper you will be terrified when it happens, you will think, I could meet my maker here, but you will also be thinking of how to get through it and if you do you will be much the wiser because of it.

Tank slapper is a motocross term. It's not a street bike term. It's when you go off a jump & land on your balls on the tank. They victim wabbles and rolls off the bike and goes fetal position. Been there done that.

If you're one to hit high speeds quickly, keep your steering head bolt tight! Better to have it wear out head bearings than have a death wobble take you out.

NEVER let go of the bars on a tank slapper!!! Firmly grip the bars, and slowly apply the Rear brakes.

The cause is because the forward wheel is speeding up slower than the back wheel, and then you are getting some crazy gyro effects.

i had a honda cub that would do tank slappers like that first one... except it felt...normal. as in, happily take corners doing it. hilarious watching the reaction of cars in front at night as your headlight starts strobing back and forth at about 10Hz... admittedly, doing 60kmh or so at best... not that scary. fun when its on purpose! push a bike down a hill... they are amazingly stable. its the stiff-armed hang-on-for-dear-life that generally makes them crash...

I had a couple modified 750 triple widow makers in the 70s so pretty familiar with tank slappers. I've also had a lot of sport bikes since then and still have a couple along with a touring Harley. I don't know if it's from riding dirt bikes but any time I feel anything quirky going on with the suspension my ass immediately comes off that seat. Transferring almost all your weight from the seat to the pegs around 2' lowers the center of gravity significantly and will almost always stop wobbles or slappers instantly. If you don't do this without thinking just like counter steering it's a good idea to practice it until it is.

If you survive the tank slapper itself, always give your front brake a gentle test before gunning it again. The forces created can easily push the brake pistons back into the calipers and you might not have brakes again if you need them.

When I was driving slowly trough some very loose dry sand with my 1985 Yamaha FZ750 it started wobble like that... But on hard sand gravel roads that bike was a actually very nice and you could drift it going sideways in a very controllable manner ;)
