of course there is a "tutorial" firstly there was the manual, secondly if you choose the lower difficulty there will be advice popups you can even enable further help option in the menu too. Seems very low on actual knowledge of the game and the historic elements of the game is shallow at best and wrong at worst :D Don't get me wrong I love and did love this game to bits, but don't make it into something its not and especially don't use it as a template to teach people that is just silly lol :D

12:25 - “What communism really means”….. Then “We’ve had some really bad communist governments.” Hah! I’d suggest that we’ve never seen a GOOD(effective as designed) Communist government. Ya just can’t get away from market forces, and just as you say, “people don’t want to be equal”. Or as I’d suggest, “Human Nature” isn’t yet suitable for Communism as written. The closest example I’ve seen that sounds at least possibly pleasant to live under was the example of some Pacific Northwest Native American tribes, prior to European contact - each family worked their hardest all spring and summer to gather, hunt, farm, and build and create. At the end of the growing year, before the snows and rains came, they’d pack up what they had to amassed, and give an equal amount to each and every other family in their tribe - just….leave it at their doors. And every other family did so also, and so at the end of that day, each family would return home to a full pile of stuff. In This way, everybody lived and had sufficiency.

When playing on Earth, Germany is the best option, especially if you get two settlers at the start. If you want to make domination easier, save the game when you have two settlers, build Berlin where you spawn, because it's a good spot. Then use the other settler to go south east. If Greece is there they usually haven't built defenses yet, so you capture Athens with your settler. Build a city there and fortify it. You have to think of the colors of your civ. Germany is blue, so the other blue, France, isn't present. Same goes for the other civs. If a civ gets destroyed it will respawn as its color sibling. Destroy Greece, England will spawn. Destroy Rome, Russia will spawn. Color siblings: Germany-France Rome-Russia Greece-England Egypt-Aztec Babylon-Zulu India-Mongolia China-America Often when a civ respawns, it's often not in their set location. For the easiest victory as Germans with two settlers you would ideally want Greece and Rome to spawn first and then destroy them. Russia instead of Rome can be a pain. Build roads on every tile you use for commerce/science. Get republic as soon as possible for more science/ trade. Also remember to set 'home city' for units that are occypying a new city to lift off cost and happiness from cities that produces a lot of units. You see in the city screen what units it supports. Units will get abandoned if home city can not support them. If you play this as Germany with double settlers at the start and do it right you will have soon settled all of Europe and moved into Eurasia. At prince level you could get tanks and railroad at 0bc. Railroad every worked tile within your city. At this level you have basically won the game. Choose space race for early victory or conquer the entire world for better score.

In order to make the game play historically more realistic and thus exciting, I always played on Earth mode and tried to stick to principles and missions according to each nation: Americans: control of the American continent. as soon as available only Republic and Democracy allowed. then go for Alpha Centauri only English: no English city on European mainland allowed (this is the hardest of all missions, consumes a lot of diplomats and strategy) Russians: take control of all Eurasia. then choose between World conquest or Alpha Centauri. only Monarchy and Communism allowed (is the easiest) Germans: turn Europe into a fortress, further conquest not before the automobile French: combo of English and German, not more than three fortified European cities, then go for colonies Zulus: secure the Suez canal, then build up some kind of African utopia/Wakanda Romans: similar to the Germans, but with an empire around the Mediterranean instead (is a little harder), then go for further conquest after gunpowder (ok, that is historically incorrect) Greeks: like Romans, but empire in Eastern Europe and Middle East (Byzanthium) Egyptians: short game, Monarchy and Pyramids until maximum 1000BC with not more than two cities Babylonians: short game, like the Egyptians, but Hanging Gardens instead of Pyramids Mongols: short game, conquest of Eurasia, then take the largest and most developed conquered city and move your capital there. then switch your identity and do whatever you want I didn't play the other nations really. I think it's because the Aztecs, Indians and Chinese just really didn't fit with the graphics/aesthetics of the game at all.

Let me teach you, the fact you got 0 from your trade was not because it was your city. It depends on the city output, the larger the trade route. Also it is dynamic, so once the city grows it will increase the trade amount. Distance does not play a role at all! Also the potential amount is halved when creating a trade route between your own cites. One thing to note is that trade route amount, applies to both cities, not just the one you target. Only one will receive the bonus but the amount will increase if your starting city is higher in trade squares and it not determined by size. Lesson complete 😉

happy to see there's still people playing this game, I also tend to replay it still from time to time, usually earth as the Russians, they have the best starting position, first 5 cities have rivers so you don't have to build roads and still have trade and science up fast. It's not unusual to have a super-start with two settlers, if then you're a little bit lucky and also pick up a hut with a cavalry unit, you can take samarkand, very often if Russia has two settlers, so will Germany and Samarkand.

Good video! I can tell you love this game a lot. Liked how you tied this into a history lesson as well. I learned so much from this game growing up. I have beaten the game on emperor and I personally find the best government in civ 1 to be despotism. Being aggressive with massive numbers of chariots in despotism, building little to no improvements to keep costs very low I have found to be a very effective way to win on King and Emperor, even though its not a particularly interesting strategy. It's also possible I am just bad at playing in a democracy, lol.

You could explore Africa here with a cavalry or other normal military unit. The block rule is a bit more complicated than you seem to think here, you can move in next to a city and the next turn move out AS long the tile you move towards is free from bordering enemies. In this case you had to come from the northeast and move northwest.
@Blackadder75
@Blackadder75 Жыл бұрын
So, you come from the irrigated tile northeast of Thebes, move to the Nile North of Thebes, and then move northwest from there. This would work if Egypt had not any units next to that northern tile

sorry for the super snail reply - did NOT see your comment until now! An interactive story (or I call iNovel) is a story where the reader is a character in the story and can change the story through their choices. It is not a new idea - but the Moodle system lends itself to it well. For your reference check out any of the Fighting Fantasy books series which I grew up with and were a major inspiration. One of the things we do on www.oxford-english-masters.com is take classic literature like Dracula and Animal Farm and turn them into interactive stories for students to play. It's a much more engaging format for many students and it encourages critical thinking. Stories are still linear ultimately especially since we need to keep to the original structure overall, but there are many branches and choices along the way. At the end of the novel, they can change the entire outcome of the story. Dracula can win. Animal Farm can have a happy ending. It all depends on how you play. The original ending is also an option of course. PM me if you need to know more!

care to elaborate? Or is it just time will tell? We haven't actually left yet of course. Scotland wants to leave the UK and remain in the EU - that's a fact, so it's just a question of whether we let them now. N.I is already talking about reunifying. Wales, seems to be ok with leaving the EU so that one, yes we might be wrong. The economy - well the Daily Mail keeps using the word booming, and others list all the jobs and money we have already lost due to Brexit. I have been looking very hard for any tangible upside potential, but it's very hard to find. All I can see is deregulating may help some bosses mistreat their workers more and thereby profit. But hey - if positive thinking and sure willpower can win out in a global competitive market, I am sure plucky little England will make an incredible success of Brexit. I hope very much I am wrong.

@@englishsandwich2928 It was in reference to your username; that 'fillings' will be in short supply - akin to 007 firing blanks at Miss Moneypenny. Time has already told on that one and many more scare stories. Scotland... once in a generation referendum they were told, so no chance. They should respect the result. I would rather Ireland republic hold another referendum and leave than reunite. A reunited Ireland would bring troubles to UK mainland with SF still receiving campaign funding from the EU. Wales is safe for now as long as farmers receive the same amount in subsidies as what they currently get from the EU (our own money back). Steel industry may need support too in the form of cheaper energy and tax relief. That should keep Plaid Cymru quiet. Never mind the tabloids, I suggest having a word with the landlord behind the bar. Your glass is half empty.

@@lagunafishing Yes I got the filling reference. Was curious on your exact views but you have expounded thank you. Proof of the pudding shall only be in the eating on Brexit - but it's great to see you have your problem-solving cap on. The oddness comes that so much problem-solving is necessary, and for precisely what gain? Not a single benefit came up in what you said above, or has materialized in real life. Brexit more and more seems to be a religion chasing a false God and no-one can say it is wrong as one cannot disprove a negative. I have searched in vain for hope that somehow there must be at least some silver lining - but it is incredibly elusive. Perhaps it has just made people feel more nationalistic, if that is an end in and of itself.

@englishsandwich2928
@englishsandwich2928 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes the EU was since 1993, but we joined the European Communities in 1973 (the forerunner to the EU). Anyhow, yes obviously Boudicca came before the EU - the point was that we have a storied history of great people (as every nation does, mind) and there is danger of belittling all that now for petty nationalism, actions that may well lead us to be a far smaller nation than we have been for a long long time. Wales and Scotland leaving to rejoin the EU is a real possibility now. Most expert economists (including the government's) says Brexit is going to be bad for the economy. So the dangers are real, whatever the benefits may be... Oh, and Henry VIII and Guy Fawkes ARE related to today's issues with Europe - this is hardly the first time we have 'left' Europe...

@@englishsandwich2928 No it's not the first time we have broken away from Europe and the last time we did we had the largest empire the world has ever seen. So wedid pretty well at establishing our place in the world without the EU and are more than capable of doing the same again. This nation has never been any good at a close political union with Europe let alone a close political union run by the French and Germans who I might add are one of our longest running dialing partners throughout our shared history. So don't have the UK's interests at heart. As for Scotland and Northern Ireland leaving the UK and joining the EU that's total poppycock the EU are interested in the UK only! why is that? Because of the financial clout of London and England they don't want the poorer parts of the UK because quite frankly they are a liability that the EU don't want and have repeatedly told Nicola Wee Jimmy Krankie Sturgeon this fact as for Northern Ireland do you actually know anything about that part of the UK other than what you hear from the MSM? Probably not! I've spent a lot of time in Northern Ireland due to work and have made quite a few friends there. You'll find Northern Ireland is like the rest of the UK on Brexit and is split down the middle a lot of Northern Irish want to remain part of the UK so there's no need to worry about the break up of the Union that is just scare tactics used by the MSM and politicians as a political football! Also the EEC as it was known in 1973 was the European Economic Community which was a free trade agreement between 9 nations not 28 nations and it certainly wasn't a close political union with complete control going to Brussels and Strasbourg. Like it has become without any input from the British people in the way of a referendum in 1993
@englishsandwich2928
@englishsandwich2928 4 жыл бұрын
@@britbazza2529 Yep agree N Ireland wouldn't likely leave - that's an extreme scenario. Scotland is rather more possible though. True the EEC is different - but complete control to Brussels? No, we had a very large say within the EU. Of course, decisions are still going to be made after Brexit in the EU which concern the UK - and we will now be on the outside. In an interconnected world, the idea one can just make all decisions one likes by oneself is just not true. Wanna sell your goods here? Meet our regulations. Oh - that's the same as before, except now we have no say in those regulations. Hmmm. Not disagreeing about the largest empire but that didn't come about due to a split with Europe - more about an industrial revolution and having bigger and better guns before anyone else did, and a piratical mindset. I don't think we can repeat those tactics now, do you? I'm proud we punch above our weight and always have, but that doesn't mean always will. We are a small nation, potentially shrinking, with a lot of our true currency tied to an illustrious past. Notice the pound's value going anywhere recently? In twelve years I've seen our money half compared to others' on the rise in Asia. And this is just the beginning. That's a pretty true measure of how far our cultural currency is going now. Money flows in when investors see strength, currency values go up. The business community is crying horror. So yeah, maybe time to build ships with lasers that no-one else has and start stealing countries again - because that's pretty much the only way we are going to rebuild that empire. Anyway, thanks man - enjoy a good wrangle! Keep calm and carry on Brexit!

@@englishsandwich2928 lol. I am a true Brexiteer as you've picked up on so yes roll-on Brexit Scotland won't leave the UK union for three reasons one they can't afford to because of something called the Barnet Formula. Two the UK Government will not give permission to hold a Scottish independence Referendum again for another generation at least. As stated by the SNP at the time the last referendum was granted, and is also a legal requirement for the SNP to ask the UK Government before they can hold one. Three the UK is supposed to be going Carbon neutral by 2050 so the days of fossil fuels ie North sea oil and gas are going to be defunct in a few years due to the Paris agreement on climate change. As for the industrial revolution yes that gave us the edge in the Victorian era and our empire. But don't underestimate the fact that the UK is the most inventive and innovative nation on the planet we are also at the cutting edge of new technologies so our economic future is fairly secure. Yes the money markets as you have pointed out are in a state of flux but that changes daily so is nothing to worry about in talking terms. The thing is at the moment we have a defeatist parliament and defeatist MPs. What we need is a very strong push on British skills and innovation along with the will of Parliament to push these qualities in a changing world. And thanks for the wrangle. @@britbazza2529 Many of my friends are. Totally agree on the innovation (hence the industrial revolution), though as an educator myself, I see Gove and others have been deeply damaging creative education that leads to innovation - but that's another issue quite separate from this. And yes we do need a push on skills - absolutely right. And this is really the key issue of our times - what is happening with our young people, our future population after all - a far more pressing issue than Brexit. If Brexit is done, all I can say is I hope, deeply, that I am wrong, and it somehow all works out wonderfully. No-one will be happier than me to admit I was wrong if it does.
