Civilization 1 is an iconic strategy game with a steep learning curve - this video shows you where to play the game and how to get started!
At Oxford English Masters, we use Civilization 1 to teach our ESL students vocabulary concerning history, geography, science, technology, politics, economics and so much more! Rather than just learning (and probably forgetting) these words by rote, students actually USE these concepts to survive in a simulation of geopolitics over time! This massively increases concept and vocabulary retention, student engagement, and builds their problem-solving, forward-planning, organizational and risk management skills all at once - a truly 3D learning experience! We have designed an entire course around the game, including reading game guides, vocabulary building, class debates and article writing, and more. Learn more about how we use cutting edge learning strategies like gamification at www.oxford-english-masters.com!

In order to make the game play historically more realistic and thus exciting, I always played on Earth mode and tried to stick to principles and missions according to each nation: Americans: control of the American continent. as soon as available only Republic and Democracy allowed. then go for Alpha Centauri only English: no English city on European mainland allowed (this is the hardest of all missions, consumes a lot of diplomats and strategy) Russians: take control of all Eurasia. then choose between World conquest or Alpha Centauri. only Monarchy and Communism allowed (is the easiest) Germans: turn Europe into a fortress, further conquest not before the automobile French: combo of English and German, not more than three fortified European cities, then go for colonies Zulus: secure the Suez canal, then build up some kind of African utopia/Wakanda Romans: similar to the Germans, but with an empire around the Mediterranean instead (is a little harder), then go for further conquest after gunpowder (ok, that is historically incorrect) Greeks: like Romans, but empire in Eastern Europe and Middle East (Byzanthium) Egyptians: short game, Monarchy and Pyramids until maximum 1000BC with not more than two cities Babylonians: short game, like the Egyptians, but Hanging Gardens instead of Pyramids Mongols: short game, conquest of Eurasia, then take the largest and most developed conquered city and move your capital there. then switch your identity and do whatever you want I didn't play the other nations really. I think it's because the Aztecs, Indians and Chinese just really didn't fit with the graphics/aesthetics of the game at all.

of course there is a "tutorial" firstly there was the manual, secondly if you choose the lower difficulty there will be advice popups you can even enable further help option in the menu too. Seems very low on actual knowledge of the game and the historic elements of the game is shallow at best and wrong at worst :D Don't get me wrong I love and did love this game to bits, but don't make it into something its not and especially don't use it as a template to teach people that is just silly lol :D

I love Civ 1 in every way, except for the AI that cheats like sin. Hopefully the open source remake will lead to the creation of a competent AI.

Playing it online is fine I suppose but the Roland MT-32 option will sound pretty bad since it will use something like the default windows 95 midi synth. Not that the game makes much sound anyway :D On lower difficulties it seems like there is a tradeoff betwen many or few opponents in that you can gain tech through conquest and diplomacy Edit: Ok that explains why I had a hard time with the babylonians last game, good info :D

I don't get the comment about onboarding. Just turn on the option and it'll do just that.

Thanks a lot for this. I’ve started reading the manual but it’s not really laid out in a tutorial kind of way like your video. This will get me started quicker.

When playing on Earth, Germany is the best option, especially if you get two settlers at the start. If you want to make domination easier, save the game when you have two settlers, build Berlin where you spawn, because it's a good spot. Then use the other settler to go south east. If Greece is there they usually haven't built defenses yet, so you capture Athens with your settler. Build a city there and fortify it. You have to think of the colors of your civ. Germany is blue, so the other blue, France, isn't present. Same goes for the other civs. If a civ gets destroyed it will respawn as its color sibling. Destroy Greece, England will spawn. Destroy Rome, Russia will spawn. Color siblings: Germany-France Rome-Russia Greece-England Egypt-Aztec Babylon-Zulu India-Mongolia China-America Often when a civ respawns, it's often not in their set location. For the easiest victory as Germans with two settlers you would ideally want Greece and Rome to spawn first and then destroy them. Russia instead of Rome can be a pain. Build roads on every tile you use for commerce/science. Get republic as soon as possible for more science/ trade. Also remember to set 'home city' for units that are occypying a new city to lift off cost and happiness from cities that produces a lot of units. You see in the city screen what units it supports. Units will get abandoned if home city can not support them. If you play this as Germany with double settlers at the start and do it right you will have soon settled all of Europe and moved into Eurasia. At prince level you could get tanks and railroad at 0bc. Railroad every worked tile within your city. At this level you have basically won the game. Choose space race for early victory or conquer the entire world for better score.

I’ve always figured this or Civ2 would be useful as a teaching aid. I had a Poly-sci class that used a board-game version of Diplomacy as a portion of the class. A WW1 version of Civ2 would have worked really well, but the prof wasn’t familiar with it.(in 2001).
