Ha! 4 I think. One main one, two at different heights for upsetting different lengths, and one small brand new one that I reviewed for KZbin.

What a fantastic video! So much great information explained clearly and concisely. There is a lot of knowledge being dropped in this video that has been sorely lacking online. I have always wanted to see/do a design/build class and I'm so glad you are undertaking it, Tom! And I'm sure we all do it, but it was great to see some validation of blacksmith yoga techniques used to get the job done. I'm looking forward to the next video. What a find job you did on this. Cheers, mate! You've earned your portion of grog for today!

Hey tom as per your method without using flux powder how do you protect the chain /any metal from getting contaminated/oxidised which leads to weakening and when metal got oxidised/contaminated it will have 99.99% getting breaked and since you never use flux then how do you protect chain from getting oxidised/contaminated
@TomFellBlacksmithАй бұрын
By keeping a clean forge, using proper heat control to not allow excessive scale build up, but most importantly, to shape the scarves, and the contact faces in such a way that they force contamination out with the blows from the hammer during the welding process.
@jeanladoire414115 сағат бұрын
"contamination" (usually iron oxide) softens or in some cases melts when hot enough. It can also reduce back to metal if the fire has low oxygen. Flux is just here to lower the melting point of these impurities and squirt them out

Hey buddy you're doing rad and bodacious and tom next time when you make chain add flux powder on the unforged link because since i researched about flux powder it is highly important to protect chain from oxidation and when you make chain add flux powder in that unforged link so that chain will not be oxidised and since you make chain of as many number of links it is important to note that chain should not be contaminated if chain gets oxidised the links will become weaker and have high chance of breaking and to protect chain from getting oxidised /contamination adding flux powder is important while linking chain 🤝🤝
@TomFellBlacksmithАй бұрын
Thanks for this! I agree about the use of flux, however there is room for both methods. With proper technique, the impurities should be forced out of the weld. Flux is often used as a substitute for good technique.

Your fire welds are always on point!Excellent work! I’d be curious to see how hand fire welded chain holds up to contemporary manufactured chain of the same link lengths and thickness.
@TomFellBlacksmithАй бұрын
Thanks for saying so! Me too. My suspicion would be that modern manufactured stuff would be better (certainly cheaper!) because there will always be inherent weakness due to human error in the fire welded stuff. I guess, in theory, if you could ensure each fire weld was complete and fused throughout the join, then they should be as strong as each other, but I'd rather not x-ray the ones I've done!
