Damn this gives me chills! I was 17 years old at the time and would have been absolutely blown away by this. I didn't get to see them live until a few years later when I was 20. They were already a much bigger deal by then of course, but still put on an awesome show.

came out a few years after graduating college.. going through weak relationships, meeting horrible women.. losing the chances with the ones you really liked to rumors, lies, jealousy, etc. . making people out to be more than they are because you wanted them to be something they're not so badly, it hurts..

So after a lot of relistening, I have made an INTERPRETATION of the song. This is what I believe the meaning is, so to start off, I personally think it delves into themes of internal conflict and the search for solace in a world filled with superficiality. The opening lines, "I, I could use / A shot; your novacaine / My soul's a fuse / Blows away your name," suggest a desire for numbing or escaping from emotional pain. The mention of "novacaine" alludes to a temporary relief or anesthesia from the agony caused by a particular person or situation. The protagonist's soul feels volatile, as if ready to explode, erasing the memory of the source of their suffering. The chorus presents a dynamic between different personas: "Then you can be the remedy / And I can be the enemy / And he can go and live as nothing/Then you can be the wannabe / And I can be the remedy." Here, there's a sense of shifting roles and perspectives. The protagonist sees themselves as both the source of healing ("remedy") and the antagonist ("enemy"), saying that the person can heal him. Meanwhile, two other characters are shown, one being a person who can be his healer, but it seems he believes they're faking it/pretending or wanting to be it("The Wannabe"). Another character is depicted as insignificant ("live as nothing"), perhaps representing an outside force or a person that is getting in the way. The lines "Say this world is not so shallow / When you can't beg, steal, or borrow / Save your breath, your soul is hollow / And it's all too much to swallow" express disillusionment with the superficiality of the world. The inability to find genuine connection or fulfillment leads to a feeling of emptiness ("your soul is hollow") that is overwhelming ("it's all too much to swallow"). The repeated refrain of "The remedy" serves as a mantra, a reminder of the protagonist's search for resolution and relief from their inner turmoil. Overall, I believe the song reflects on the complexities of human relationships, the struggle for authenticity in a shallow world, and the longing for healing amidst inner conflict.

Unless the novacaine line is a nod or dig to/at Mark Oliver Everett for some reason. Just wondering since Tommy was in Eels for a while.

Late 90’s-early 2000’s was a different scene. Catching 5 bands for $7 at a firehall or elks lodge with barely a stage was normal. I miss that.

Check out this story , at 0:04 you see my good buddy helping put amps on stage. Prior to show the guitarist needed string so my boys brought him to guitar center, my buddy there took a guitar down and plugged it in and started ripping all the fall of troy sht and from that point on the singer guitar player was acting like a jerko ff. lol

We smoked a blunt with him too. In a parking deck around the corner from the venue. 2 weeks later we smoked again in their tour van when they played at Bloomfield for the 2nd time. It was the day after their show with Anterrabe in NY. We went to all 3.

This came out a month before I turned 14.... brings me back to the day I sat in my room with headphones on, no friends, just a loner listening to music and dealing with emotions. Thought I'd share my memories, I enjoyed reading the memories of others. Thank you for sharing in the comments everyone! This song has always played in my head from time to time throughout the years. I still feel like I'm stuck in my teen years, just older and wiser. I really miss those days though

Ima be honest though low key they still play like a punk band at these bigger venues. They speed up the tempo to all there songs live and the tempo is always a beat you could two step or skank too live. Just my observation from last night I finally caught AFI live.
