I bought one of these, I set it up, tightened the scope mount as tight as I dared not knowing at what point it might strip, moved it around, etc. Went to twist off the cap and the tube jumped off the mount and landed on the ground. It was horrible.

i bought celestron 130 slt I hope I don't regret it.I'm still trying to figure it out, I saw the saturn with 9mm but it was too small, I think I need to buy what is called a barlow lens.

There's quite a few folks who have been able to screw on an SCT-type Focal Reducer to the back of their MAKSUTOV telescopes in order to widen the field of view and to speed up the f-stop ratio. Even the large 2700mm f/15 SkyMax 180 will come down to f/9.5 and offer considerably more light to work with if fitted with a 0.63x reducer. I've seen some pleasant deep space objects and nebulas photographed with 127 MAKs as well. The Schmidt-Cassegrain type scopes have their own set of problems... often requiring flatterers and regular collimation. The cool-down time for a MAK wasn't really covered here and is typically slightly longer than other types of telescopes. Other than Great Orion Nebula, you can't see much in the way of DSOs looking though telescopes with the naked eye, so that leaves the Moon, Stars and Planets... all of which are best served with a MAK. If buying for Astrophotography, I'd probably aim for the higher-end Celestron EDGE HD models or even a RASA type model. And of course you can do spectacular wide-field (24mm-50mm) to medium-field (85mm-600mm) images with just a camera, with or without tracking.

You can low the exposure on your camera by pro mode if you have it just look on right and if you saw the plus at the top and at the bottom is minus thats the exposure

She says two lenses of similar focal length, not focal ratio, changing the aperture changes the focal ratio, telescopes are fixed Theres no speed of a telscope ie f4 is just a meaningless ratio without any other information. Aperture defines resolution, and light gathering focal length defines field of view. Changing the aperture on a camera dosent change the field of view just depth of field which telescopes don't have. You can only compare camera lenses to telescopes when wide open.

7/2024: Good Day from the Future: The problem with the LX200 and I assume all the LX series is that you still must manually/automatically in combination, align the telescope on 2 stars that the database will offer you. Where I live now, I don't have much "clear overhead view" of the sky. I did when I lived in Arizona though. So, I can't really get a precise Alignment. What do you do if you want to do Solar Observation? Daytime? How do you "align the telescope? I'm presently on my 2nd 10 inch Meade LX200. This one is a GPS with Enhanced Optical elements. I give up. Spell check won't change the mispells. So live with them. The LX Series of Telescopes, otherwise are superb in every way. My current one is 14 years old and works fine. The micro focus adjustment needed to be replaced. If you want a High End "reasonably-priced" telescope, these are an excellent choice IMO. Thanks & Best Regards

What’s cool about these SLT is that if you want to change it into a different type without changing or paying for another telescope, you can each of those types of telescope pieces either reflector or refractor or even Maksutav cassegrain typeshave a rail system both on the viewing piece of whatever type and on the computerized AZ mount, meaning that you can swap them we don’t need to pay for another SLT telescope at a very expensive price

Maks are sharper and have better contrast than SCT's due to their smaller central obstruction.

Nice and simple explanation, thanks. I have a NexStar 127SLT which is a MAK. I want to do astrophotography, but as I suspected, and you confirmed, this OTA is unsuitable. You can take shorter videos of planets and stack them but that is just as easily done using an SCT.

In the good old days, all Celestron SCT models used two fork tines-single tine models didn't exist. Having said that, the Evolution Edge HD looks like a brilliant compromise between stability and weight. The CPC Deluxe Edge HD series is also a beauty. Only wish it had an 8-hour inbuilt rechargeable power source similar to the Evolution Thank you for the presentation :-)

I thought it was the typically long focal ratio of the Mak that made it photographically ‘slow’’-not the fact that it has a thick meniscus type corrector. BTW, it’s pronounced Cass-eee-grain rather than Cass-AY-grain.
