I believe, in India, this all roots to the independence of women in general - a man can repeatedly approach a woman and even rejection won't harm his social image but if a woman approaches someone, she's often seen as an "easy girl". There is too much labelling in the society for women at all stages, before marriage, after marriage whereas men are free.

Rhea. , you are very right. When we are abroad whether we like it or not we represent our country. Have worked in western country and racism is subtle. I worked in a leadership position in healthcare and there were many Indians like me heading departments, , but none of our white colleagues would invite any of us Indians to their houses or socialise. They will socialise with other white people. Learnt to enjoy my own company. Having said that , I also know told to me first hand about 30 years ago by a white backpacker….’ By word of mouth we know the orphanages and places where we get free food. So we go there saying I am a volunteer , pick up a baby in orphanages and sit through the day, have regular meal, go,out for aight seeing by evening.”
