I'm 74 years old, so I've been aware of Roger Miller for several decades. I admire his singing and songwriting talents. I had never heard this particular song, but I just looked it up and learned from Wikipedia that, although it was written by Roger, it was first recorded in 1958 by Ray Price, and it was the 'B' side of a song called 'City Lights'. That could explain why I wasn't familiar with the song. I like the song. It's a hurtin' song. It's about heartache, and I would guess that most people everywhere in the world have at some time in their life felt the pain and depression caused by heartache. There's no doubt that heartache hurts deeply, and in the worst cases, it hurts permanently. During the song, Roger looked sad, and that was appropriate. So, if Roger was still with us, and if I could give him some advice about this particular performance, I would tell him that he should NOT have started LAUGHING the moment he finished the song! And I would tell him NEVER to do that again when singing this song or any other hurtin' song! It's so ironic that one verse in the song starts with these words: "You took the laughter from this world of mine." Roger's laughter made a mockery of that line, and made light of the entire song. Maybe some other professional singers will read my comment and will take my advice. Maybe at the end of a hurtin' song, they will show EMPATHY for everyone who is suffering from a broken heart. I certainly hope so.

Lyrics Raised on songs and stories, heroes of renown, The passing tales and glories, that once was Dublin town, The hallowed halls and houses, the haunting children's rhymes, That once was Dublin city, in the Rare Oul Times. Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines, I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times. My name it is Sean Dempsey as Dublin as could be Born hard and late in Pimlico in a house that ceased to be My trade I was a cooper, lost out to redundancy Like my house that fell to progress my trade's a memory And I courted Peggy Dignan, as pretty as you please, A rogue and child of Mary, from the rebel liberties, I lost her to a student chap, with skin as black as coal, When he took her off to Birmingham, she took away my soul. Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines, I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times. The years have made me bitter, the gargle dims me brain 'Cause Dublin keeps on changing and nothing seems the same. The Pillar and the Met have gone, the Royal long since pulled down As the grey unyielding concrete makes a city of my Town. Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines, I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times. Fare thee well sweet Anna Liffey, I can no longer stay, And watch the new glass cages, that spring up along the quay, My mind's too full of memories, to old to hear new chimes, I'm a part of what was Dublin, in the Rare Oul Times. Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines, I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times. Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines, I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.

I was born in the late fall of 1978. The Very Charming, Very Delightful, Very Entertaining, Very Funny, Very Handsome, Very Intelligent, Very Witty Singer, Comedian, Musician and Songwriter Jim Stafford should have been in the movies! He would have been great in movies like the movie 1980 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, the 1981 movie The Incredible Shrinking Woman with Lily Tomlin, the 1992 movie Straight Talk with Dolly Parton, just to name a few!
