One of the world's greatest contemporary blues artists. In the words of Sam Phillips, originator of Sun Records - "The essence of the blues can not be written as a score, it must come spontaneously from within"

I love Johnny Winter. The breadth of his talent is so awesome....he could play ridiculously fast and aggressively, but then he could play the simplest blues like this just as soulfully. He had a heck of a voice, too. R.I.P to a true blues legend!

+sküll düggery I have lived in the Chicago area my whole life, bought Willie Dixon a shot at a bar in Evanston, still have the shot glass. His son Freddy played bass at a jam in my basement with Johnnie "Guitar" Watkins on lead, Billie Branch on harmonica and I can not remember who was on drums. The Blues have always been a part of my life!

I read these comments and I SMH. Johnny Winter is amazing. SRV is amazing, Muddy, BB, Hendrix et.al. Stop trying to judge one artist against an other. It's a foolish argument. It doesn't work for any artform. The art is only as good as the connection it makes between the artist and the observer. That is the point.

Couldn't say it any clearer than that, period. No list can be agreed upon. We all have different tastes and experiences, a moment when some riff or song touched our soul at the right time and became embedded forever in our memory.Enjoy your moments while you're able because life is fleeting and should not be wasted putting others down. It' s easy to put someone down, it's much harder to lift someone up!

This was sweet.Johnny was one of the best ever.He was an incredible singer,he could pick,he was incredible with a slide,he could play traditional with the best or straight rockin blues, anyway you wanted it,just blues personified.Man,listen to his voice, listen to the tone phrasing and the inflections. The guy was a prodigy.I saw him twice.I worked the stage at the Filmore West the first time and got to meet him and spent the entire time he played 10 feet from him sitting on the edge of the stage.I think I was 16.Unfortunately he drank too much and took too many F40's(seconal)the first night,we were all eating F40s like PEZ back then and couldn't play the first night, but he kicked ass the next night. He might have written a song about that, but he was the man.Saw him years later when he had to sit down the whole concert but he still blew the roof off the building

I just reviewed the comments below. Each artist brings himself , skills to each song. To try to rate them is hopeless. Each of us brings our life to the listening. Maybe it's part of our experience brought to the listening that creates difference in favorites. At he New Orleans jazz and arts festival I was heading between venues and sat on the grass watched a bluesman do his thing. Asked him What label he recorded on. He said "I don't know about no labels, I just play the blues". That's what the blues is all about.
