There's a story involving this version of this song that I'm piecing together. Apparently, Jerry was extremely pissed/disappointed at Brent for bringing his personal baggage onto the stage. The next day before the show Jerry went OFF on Brent backstage. This is documented in a couple places. Jerry was devastated when Brent passed away, having this happen 3 days prior must have been brutal for him. I had heard that Jerry was pissed and came across a GQ interview of Lemeuix from 2016 where talks about this version. I was at these shows but was probably complaining that they weren't playing "High Time" and chugging beers instead of watching the stage. I have no recollection of this Brent incident.

When Jerry died, a huge crowd assembled in Forest Park in St. Louis, and a local radio station had a van parked there playing Dead music. The last song of the night, past midnight as the crowd trickled away was “And We Bid You Goodnight “. Two years later, at my brother’s funeral, we played “Brokedown Palace”. It’s August 9 and I’m crying.

Bob Weir was great on vocals here, and he looked like he was having a good ol' time.

I see some good times I gotta get to ring that bell I gotta see some good times Sometimes you make up for when I'm not feeling well It must be due to some great times Cause right now I feel like hell Never trust a woman who wears Her pants too tight She might love you tomorrow But she'll be gone tomorrow night Come tomorrow I'll get my pay To leave this town she don't really love me Ain't no reason to stick around

More vaguely misogynist shite from Brent, who always seemed to be blaming some woman else for his problems. Boy he sure was mediocre, and unfortunately brought the rest of the band down with him. I guess we can imagine the 'you' in this song 'wears her pants too tight". Barf. Happily only played six times, and I missed them all.

Each Grateful Dead keyboardist brought The Grateful Dead into another direction. It's actually hard to believe how much influence they each had, but looking back on the songs and styles through the decades sheds some light on it.

4:40 🥺 Brent’s last show was the following day, July 23, 1990. He died of a drug overdose three days later… during this time, he was going through a bitter divorce and child custody battle.
