Nowadays 2 sheets of flat plastic are imprinted with a distorted image of a hemisphere. (For the northern and southern hemispheres.) Both of the flat plastic sheets are then separately moulded into a hemisphere (removing the distortion) in a heated mould... Both hemispheres are then trimmed and joined together to form the finished globe. Voila! A perfectly smooth globe with FAR superior imagery than found on any old fashioned handmade globe. 21st Century technology trumps 17th Century technology.

P.S. If you are not rich you can still buy superb seamless globes for less than $50 if you browse around the usual online shops.

These look like a toy when compared to Johnston globes. The globes are big, but where is the dedication to cartography? It is the same map that you paste on all your globes. Computers have killed printed maps.

Our cartography is extremely detailed and not simply computer generated. We spend a lot of time on our cartography but that is fine if it is not your taste. Johnston globes do have some beautiful cartography and with each globe we make bespoke to order a client can request anything you can imagine. We do designs and styles of all sorts. We have three full time cartographers working in our studio along with very talented illustrators and painters and makers and we work with each client to design their globe exactly as they want it.

@@Globemakers my judgment may sound like unnecessary elitism, but then again, due to their pricing, Bellerby globe are the pinnacle of unnecessary elitism. I agree that Bellerby globes are quite a step-up from the mass-produced Chinese globes we get, and the 12 inch Bellerby at David Rumsey's is comparable to a vintage 12 inch Rand McNelly globe. But back when those vintage globes were new, they were run-of-the-mill affordable items. A Bellerby is not. I see cartography as a functional art form... like architecture. The planning stage is where a cartographer shines. Hand-painting every single map doesn't add to the cartography itself, does it? Sure, some will appreciate the effort. But there are others.

Any chance you might also release an adult coloring book of maps? Since you hand paint these stunning maps, I can just imagine how much fun I would have coloring these maps. You could even save costs by just selling pdf pages of specific maps on ETSY. We can print them on watercolor paper to play with at home. If you like the idea, I just ask for a few free maps to color.

I have a tailor-made Bellerby globe and it is a daily source of pleasure. I visited the workshop and was fortunate enough to meet Peter Bellerby in person. His team are also marvellous.

Yes the British Pathe video, they were not hand painted globes or traditionally handcrafted like ours - but still amazingly made and an important part of globe-making history!

I am looking to buy a nice globe for my daughter, and ended up here. While a Churchill is out of my budget this year 😉, I can’t wait to show her this video so that she may see how much of an art they can be. She is on the autism spectrum and globe making is something I could imagine her enjoying. Please expect her CV in the next 5-10 years!! Bravo!!

I have just watched your “short films” playlist and now all I can think of is just how many times you’ve had to tell, your “origin story” story about the 80th birthday present, 3 months became 2 years, £12 to £20,000 didn’t have the budget etcetera etcetera. OMG now I’m saying it! I’ve seen it so many times I’ve learnt it off by heart. I do admit though, as far as origin stories go, it’s a good one. Thanks for sharing your creations. Take care 🙂🐿❤️🌈
