I just bought a mint condition Penn 704 greenie. I took it apart to degrease all the old grease. Then I reinstalled new grease and put it back together. I noticed that the rotor brake seems a little bit worn. I guess from sitting in the box all those years. But I heard that the 704 can be used just as well without a rubber rotor brake. Should I just throw out the rotor brake and use it without it?

Hello, i was hoping you could give me some insight. I noticed on a lot of my older penn reels, when i put the drag on the lowest setting the spool spins almost as if it were in free spool. Except for my 114hlw special senator. At the lowest setting it actually has a good bit of resistance and will not spin at all unless i pull it. Is this normal? Should it have a good bit of drag on the lowest setting?
@TSGReelService

Thanks for checking out the video. Not sure how much drag you have at the star wheel totally backed off, but it's a function of your drag stack height.... HT-100's, metal washers and spacer. If you're only pulling about 2 to 4lbs when it's "wide-open", I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's more than that, then I would open up to reel to double check all the eared metal washers are set inside the main gear and not riding high. Spread the word about the channel.

@@TSGReelService Oh definitely man you're a wizard. I've disassembled and reassembled the whole reel like 10 times now, cleaning the drag components, replacing them, and arranging them as they should it's still the same. Drag is at about 3-4lbs "wide open" I think I'm going to try to not think about it too much in my dreams 😅 But yeah man I couldn't have done it without your videos

@@Joemomma2522 glad to hear my videos are helpful. Yes, you should be fine that amount at wide open. If it's ever an issue for you, you can try removing the tension washer between the spacing sleeve and star drag and seeing how that feels for you. Only issue is that you may sacrifice top end drag pressure.

Hi, on min 6.25, there is a small washer you mention not to lose. Is that washer also on the 4000oc models? If it is not there will it prevent the Antireverse from working?
@TSGReelService
@TSGReelService 6 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! No, the 4000OC doesn't have the ring you're referring to, but if the post that the ring came off of is missing from your reel, then the A/R won't function properly. If it's still there, then you probably have an A/R (likely rusted or very oily) or A/R lever issue. Spread the word about the channel.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. The ORIGINAL series were bulletproof and brutes back in the day, but not these new ones. Being a brute doesn't mean much if you're injured. It's true that a pre-service can be beneficial, especially when catered to one's type of fishing, but the reels are delivered ready to fish. It's more of a design issue, in my opinion. With regular care and service, these are better than the average bear.... just not sure that happens in the real world. It's not just Daiwa, though..... the Spinfisher also experienced a decline in durability for the angler who doesn't take care of it. It's the new way in this "throwaway" world. Here's food for thought.... $200 invested once at 8% APR for 60 years is $20,200.... at 10% (stock market approximate historic average) is $60,000... at 15% APR is 876,600!!!

Prefer via description? 1) was these issues happening before or after you serviced the reel? 2) if before, have you attempted to service the reel before reaching out to me (seems like you may have), or is untouched? 3) Is it lateral or vertical play? 4) is the sanding noise happening under load or just when cranking it in the house? Prefer a one on one? I do video consultations.... email me at [email protected]

This video was awesome! However, I ran into a slight issue. The transfer level screw broke off inside the reel! The head of it sheared right off from the rest of the screw. How can I extract this screw from the reel? Any ideas? I don’t want to trash the reel. It still works after full reassembly, but obviously…. I’d like to/need to extract and replace that transfer lever screw
@TSGReelService
@TSGReelService Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Sorry to hear about the troubles. I'm assuming you're referring to part #234 (234-750 transfer lever screw). Neither of what I will propose is 100% guaranteed, but if it fails, you can always remove the "click dog" if you don't want to constantly hear that clicking while you're cranking. You can tap the screw by drilling it out without damaged the threads in the reel frame (drill bit needs to be a smaller diameter. Or, you can use the same drill bit to drill the screw part way, and then use a reverse threaded drill bit to back the screw. Option 2 is safer since there's more "room" for error, but, if you can pull it off, option 1 is more effective. Or, you can just leave everything as-is and fish it if the click dog sound doesn't bother you. All the best with it, whatever you decide.

Great video, I just got a Daiwa BG 20 today and it is a beauty! I’ve been collecting and restoring these BG reels over the last three months. I have six now and will probably not get anymore given what they cost. I have a BG90, BG60, BG30, BG20 and two BG10 reels. I don’t plan to get the BG13 and BG15. In fact, I can’t even find a BG15 anywhere right now. I like the way you take the reel completely apart. I don’t do that unless I need to which for me is usually 80% of the time. On all the KZbin reel service videos I watch and I watch a lot, yours are the most comprehensive. I just wish I had your hand and finger dexterity (but I’m 70!) I’ve never seen one of your videos where you did not teach me several things I did not know. I have 420 vintage spinning reels in my collection including reels from 17 different countries. Honestly I own more Daiwa reels than any other brand. Most of my vintage spinners are saltwater reels except where I decided to collect the entire series of a certain model. I’ve done that a lot like I did with these BGcreels. For the longest time I could not figure why the BG reels were more popular than the Daiwa GS reels. My favorite vintage Daiwa reels are the 8600 and 8700. They are worm gear reels like a Penn 704 but have three ball bearings. I have all the series plus two bonus 8600s. They were only made for a couple years and predate the sivers, GS, and BG reels. I own complete sets of the silver series and GS series reels, I truly wish you could see my collection. Dennis Kuntzcalls it my museum. My saltwater Mitchell’s reels are extraordinary especially my Mitchell 498 reels. I own seven that include 4 different models. I’m sorry I wrote so much. Again this is a superb video! -- Chris pS. Have a very blessed Christmas season!

@@TSGReelService Thanks. I dont have a channel to post to. I did follow the schematic .jpg available online to reassembled the bearing stack. Perhaps the original factory pressing of the bearings is deeper than my manual effort. I disassembled/reassembled multiple times on both my reels. Tightening bearing cap grinds both reels. So I have left the bearing caps tightened to a degree way lower than the original factory setting, where I had to use your teflon tape method to loosen them for the disassembly. It could be the thickness of the grease I used, and I will retighten the caps after a good session of use. If they still grind I can loosen the cap and use Loctite. Or I can buy better grease.
