@GeekShhh Note for eternity: at the end NVRAM reset is not neccessery for Mac Pro 5,1 with OpenCore. You can suck if there's non-native supported GPU in it.

It’s an unreal value machine. I’ve been buying Macs since 94 and this is the best value I ever got from Apple. I also managed to blag an education discount so £500 here in the UK…. That’s a madness!!! I don’t do any video or 3D, I’m just an old skool Graphics/Art/Print guy, and the base model with a a TB4 NVME and a 6Tb Networked drive is working like a dream for me. Apple is generally expensive but these new Minis are phenomenal value at the low end.

Glad I’m not the only one who appreciates the internal speaker. I played a variety of music selections and they all sound great. Even at full volume, there was no distortion at all. Like you, I will not be adding any external speakers.

Will this work with both the v1 and v2 of the alpine ridge card? I saw in another guide that there should be a green and blue chip, but mine only has the blue chip. Will this still work in windows?

Green and Blue chips are on the TitanRidge and maybe others, but not the Alpine Ridge. AR only has 1 chip. This should work on both revisions of AR. Once you flash the card it will no longer work in Windows. Only MACos. I did a Titan Ridge video for this as well on my channel btw. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@GeekShhhThanks for the quick reply. I have an Alpine Ridge V1 card that I used successfully with a hackintosh with the original firmware. However I upgraded my CPU to a Cascade lake and it won't boot anymore. I've been trying to get it back up, but in the meantime am booting to Windows. I get an error code 31 in device manager for the thunderbolt card. I'd like to see if flashing the original firmware back on might fix it. I heard those chips can get corrupted sometimes. Do you know where I could find that?

@@andreazavareei6548 I believe i had AR V2, I ended up selling it so i no longer have the original firmware. Your best bet is to make post on Hackintosh reddits or old Hackintosh forums that discuss thunderbolt cards like Tonymacx86. Sometimes people still check the updates.

This isnt going to drop to near $200 in 2 years, the M1 from nearly 4 years ago will be around that. Certainly in the UK people are regularly selling them for more than £200-300. Best bet is education pricing or costco etc deals. usually £100/$100 off Also - dont think the M4 has AV1 Encode - only decode acceleration?

Right now in the US you can get a m2 mac mini for 2-300 on FB Marketplace. Asking price is usually around 350 but majority people that sell things used can be negotiated down. So when the M5/M6 Mac mini comes in a year or two at the same price point as previous gens. People will def sell off this gen for 2-300. Maybe 350, but like i said majority can be negotiated down. You can just click the sold filter on FB marketplace and see what im saying. Thanks for watching and commenting

I think I did like 4 with no issues. Hope they optimize it and get tone mapping HW enabled on Mac. Apparently they are working on HEVC encoding that includes the HDR data, so tone mapping won't be required.

Appreciate all the work you do for fellow Plex Users. But due to Plex not currently being built to harness Hardware Transcoding for HDR Tone Mapping on Apple Silicon, don’t you basically have to have HDR Tone Mapping Enabled to transcode 4K to a lower quality since the picture is too washed out to enjoyably watch with it disabled. I’m not sure this is an accurate representation of Transcoding Capabilities when HDR Tone Mapping is disabled on an Apple M4.

Thanks man, i try. I keep hdr tm and subtitles off when i run test. If you are unsatisfied with hdr tm on Apple Silicon then you would have to acquire non hdr content or stick to certain intel cpus and nvidia gpus for your hdr tm transcode needs. Plenty of options for setting up a Plex server that works best for you. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I also find it interesting that it's allowing more that 1 HW transcode. According to Plex, Mac limits it to 1 transcode.

I have mine setup too, but have HDR tone mapping enabled. I have quite a few 4K HDR movies, so I figured it was best to turn that on. I know it's a CPU hog, but do you notice much difference with it turned off?

I just tested it for me it seems when you only have 1 transcode running with HDR Tone Mapping enabled it uses near 50 percent CPU usage then i opened up 4 transcodes and it dropped to 20 percent i don't know why this happens but just don't panic if CPU Util is high. I think it has something to do with apples power efficiency.

Great video. I use jellyfin and I've found the best streaming device for my clients is an amazon firestick 4k max. Not crazy expensive and It direct plays almost everything.

In my testing the A770 had the same results as the A380. I believe Intel limits their gpus like Nvidia does. So i will say this cpu.....Thanks for watching and commenting!

Man, your channel has a great potential, no one is comparing transcoding performance, you have access to many hardware but PLEASE…. Get your self some methodologies, it makes no sense to use these random movies and qualities. Also, do not run the movies in the same machine as the Plex server, your power consumption will be inaccurate. Let me give you an exemple of what I do. I run the same copy of John Wick 4k HDR Remux and transcode it with HDR tone mapping, subtitles and truehd áudio and got 8 simultaneous transcoding to 1080p. You can try it with other settings and lower resolutions and get an usefull metric. Edit: Your wattage is going high because the pc is acting as a Client, the power consumption of the iGPU will not to higher than 20w if only used for the server.

Its not the same computer, its 2 of them. It only seem like that bc i have the windows maximized. My plex server is on windows 11 and im using my mac computer to do the test and to remote into the windows computer. This is why when we look at HWinfo at the very top it says 'Chrome Remote Desktop.' These random movies are all 4K and the differential in sizes makes the results unique to my channel. All test are done with the same movies files and in the same exact order so the results can be compared to one another. HDR tone mapping and subtitles are turned off so it doesn't effect the results. Thanks for watching and commenting! EDIT: 1:23 Is where I check in with the system before we even start the test and you can see the cpu is only at 9 watts. Your clearly commenting on the wattage after the test starts.

The new Intel CPU's look like a BEAST for a Plex server even without the addition of a standalone GPU is my take-away from this video. It will be interesting to see what their next generation of GPU's will bring to the table outside of gaming.
