Unfortunately for Ronaldo, his dives from earlier on in his career created a bad reputation for him with the referees, which could be why the ref wasn't all that sympathetic to him in this game. That is what tended to happen in football - at least before VAR started being used. I am surprised that some players blatantly fouled Ronaldo repeatedly with Stuart Pearce as their manager. I honestly thought he always had a "Play hard but fair" sort of mentality - given that he was like that as a player. Plus, he always seemed like a strict disciplinarian type who would be a stickler to his values and principles, and so I am really surprised he allowed his players so much freedom to foul Ronaldo so many times! Really, football sometimes doesn't make any sense to me. Seems like Mr Pearce's supposed values and principles "went out the window" in this game! 😡

This game alone, Cristiano could have easily gotten 3 - 4 City players sent off, if the EPL back then was as strict as is today on fouls, with VAR in context

I always thought you're not allowed to hesitate on the run up to a penalty. 🤔Coz it got a bit ridiculous in the 80's, with players flapping their arms, and it's unsportsmanlike to try win by trickery. It doesn't seem to be getting enforced these days.
