Your mention of the Startlng 49 made me take a look at GPA and I noticed one of those weirdly high results you sometimes see on HA. In September, a 5.5 sold for $36,000. Seems way out of whack with other results for this book. For instance, the Crippen copy--an 8.5--sold for $23,400 in April and a 9.2 copy sold for $31, 200 in November 2022. Be interesting to see how this 9.0 does.

It's one of those books that can be weird. Classic covers can have oddball results (looking at Suspense #3 showed just that)... that said, that result is crazy. We'll see how this one does.

Nice preview video, Rob. Thanks. MF52 is a pretty tough GA DC key, and at a 6.5 white is stupendous. I have seen it least often offered publicly in the last 30+ years than Adventure 40 or Flash 1. AA16 would be the other DC GA key (and I am excluding all the early Supe Action covers and pre Robin Tecs) that might rival MF52 as far as availability in the market place and not cgc census records. The Suspense 3 might hit $200k - $250k

It would be interesting to extend the research into Action #1s for sale to the other major keys. For just that reason. Some of them just don't come up for sale and others are pretty regularly featured.

Wealthy collectors have done as much damage to the comics collecting market as they did to the antique car market. They have their hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars, to spend on cars that will be garaged and never see a single mile of the road, and comics that are encased in hard plastic and will never be read. Some of them are less interested in collecting comics because they love the art and stories than they are in buying and flipping for a profit, driving the "values" of these collectors items far beyond the reach of us actual enthusiasts. So we have to settle for graphic novels or digital copies. And that's fine, because we still get to enjoy the art and the stories without spending loads of cash.

I tuned into one of his Instagram lives roughly 2 years ago (I think around the time Goldin was accused of selling a fake sports card)… Ken referred to himself in the 3rd person, Ken had 9 figures in the bank, doesn’t need to cheat, 5 acres on a gold course. The auction designation that Superman #[nn] (#1) was the first newsstand comic book devoted to a single character should have specified *"series,"* because there were many earlier one-shot comic books devoted to Popeye, Dick Tracy, etc. that were single-character issues on newsstands. Or the designation "superhero."
@itsalljustcomics15 күн бұрын
It's interesting because that's an off-quoted designation, but it's not listed as such in the price guide. I will have to look at old guides to see if it used to be listed as such and people just have it in their heads.

Totally agree- this is a museum piece and irreplaceable piece of history for one of the most beloved characters. Thank you for the followup. Many of the Church lots in this sale came from Steve Geppi with a reserve 2x Guide and still didn't sell. GA was dead at this auction. The passing of a few lots resulted in bidders shying away from all but the most compelling books.

That's a great detail. It's interesting to look back at the estimates for these lots versus the sale price. @@itsalljustcomics I have zero inside information but the Goldin part of this book's journey is so screwy that it makes me wonder whether everything is as it seems. One other point, I think you may be underestimating the deals a seller of a big book can get from the auction houses. In these cases, the deals wouldn't be enough to turn the sellers' losses into profits but in some other cases they might be.
@AnthonyOBrien-j7uАй бұрын
Wasn't there a big failed Superman 1 flip in the past year? Not the 5.0 or the 7.0 that are on GPA (which must have been painful enough for the flippers), but a flip with a higher dollar loss. I was going to post about it on the CGC boards but never got around to it and I can no longer remember the details. .
@itsalljustcomicsАй бұрын
I'll take a look! I've been doing a lot of research, but I can easily have missed one. It's got to be at least a million dollar sale, so that limits my candidate pool.

@@itsalljustcomics Found it but it was a bad flip followed by a great flip. Sup 1 3945284001 sold for $2,604,750 Dec 2021 (not sure where because the GPA link isn't working for me), then sold on Goldin June 2023 for $1.62 mill and then on HA January 2024 for $2.34 million. The Goldin to HA flipper earned 720K after holding the book for only 6 months.

Yes, as I recall, there was about a $1M loss. As I recall, it was a Superman #1 CGC 7.0 which first sold at Comic Connect for well over $2M. Subsequently, it sold for about $1M less at Goldin.
