Was buying those 1 piece plastic frames worth the savings and did you have extra hive beetle issues because of, is it manageable?

Short answer is that I’ll buy more of them this year. Pros and cons to them but overall I like them.

If you spread those containers apart could set trusses on top build a building with them.. wish I could get some it's like rule number one in my twp no shipping containers .. they are perfect.. going to just start selling singles this season they are already selling good to hobbyist got 100 to sell right now.. my nuc customers ask all the time why not sell the whole thing.. I'll still sell nucs this year probably my last.. I need to cycle out old boxes .. comb is new thou so it's good stuff. 6 machical treatment and 3 chemical treatments they never did pickup a mite load.. then I got them shut down soon as we got our first frost so I didn't have late brooding problems.. save that late brooding for spring build up.. plus it locks them in youth like Ian Steppler always says.. I see what he's talking about now.

Why did you go the frame feeder route as opposed to the bucket feeder method. I have been using the top feeders as I am a 8 frame medium everything guy. But wrapping up the year, I am wondering why I am not feeding through the top with buckets. These top feeders are expensive and very hard to build your own. I would be interested on your take on bucket feeding drawbacks. Nice container, nice trailer, very glad to see that you are still growing.
@DuckRiverHoney
@DuckRiverHoney Күн бұрын
Buckets have to be ferried back and forth to yards. They fly off in wind. Coons and skunks knock them off. And they grow black mold badly and have to be cleaned each year. It’s less labor overall for me to use in hive feeders.

That new sea can looks really nice. If I were you I’d put thermometers in that and your darker sea cans to see the difference in temperatures. I think it might be enough to make it worthwhile painting your other sea cans white to reduce your air conditioning costs. That looks like a good little trailer. The back gate looks like it would be nice for rolling a hand cart with supers up onto the deck. You might be able to add brakes to the second axle without too much trouble.

Glad to see you are adding equipment and storage area to your operation. You mentioned that you wish your new trailer had brakes on both axles. I have a similar trailer for my landscaping operation and have found it is not necessary to have more, honestly. Just more maintenance.

@DuckRiverHoney

I’ve been using a single axle 12’ and I like that length. It fits into all my bee yards. A longer trailer is going to drag getting into some of them.

Ugh I remember all that Fall feeding, thought it would never end! We've had a wee bit of rain and even a little snow (it all melted away). Still way too dry and lack rains and groundwater for winter cover crops here in Pennsylvania. Winds have been consistent blowing every day for a month it seems. Hives have their winter insulation on and now its a waiting game. Working on rendering wax and making candles in addition to developing next years bee plan and hope the bees will be in agreement!

The bear is like a cop, everyone splits when they see one 😂I will say this. Remember to put the stress away and take the time to unwind. Jobs will be there later. They will be there tomorrow. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Having a vacation is great!! We didn’t get one this year . Those deer got pretty hefty!! This year seems to be such a hard year for keeping bees. The robbing has been so bad this year. Yellow jackets have been terrible this way too. Piedmont NC

have you had a problem with some of your summer honey crystalizing? I'm from Benton county TN, which is northwest of you. I had nearly 80 galloons. I bottled 5 gallons and left the other in 5 gallon buckets. 3 months later it's all turning to sugar. moisture is just shy of 17

The off season, even though there ain't one for a beekeeper, is a great time to make videos of the work that goes into beekeeping. A lot of people get discouraged because they don't really know how much work it is to maintain hives even in the "OFF SEASON".

Its amazing just how much a beehive can consume when there are no resources out there. I saw several nuc boxes abscond because of starving. The domino effect of robbing is no joke, I saw activity around all my hives over several weeks, one at a time. Any colony that had a weak queen became a deadout. I went back to rescue a weak colony into a nuc box and it was already gone, but was able to save most of the honey placing it on another colony.. Sugar is expensive to maintain bees and pollen patty has gone up so much its hard to afford anymore.. After the hurricanes, not a stitch of brood after the goldenrod was all washed down

Feeding sucrose in hard dearth.. add in virus problems . Need to be feeding a inverted feed those bees haven't had really nectar in how long.. feeding them sucrose they need to process that where the inverted they do not.. plus it doesn't draw robbing doesn't have that scent that draws robbing. I make in the microwave by the half ton . Need to grind it first.. add little water to 3 pounds of ground up sucrose splash of vinegar in ziplock makes amazing fondant.. feeding them tymol probably good once but not over and over.. could add hive alive or whatever to it . Microwave Turns it liquid just slash it around lay flat beautiful fondant for like 50 cents a pound.. bees draw white wax on it dead winter . Get nice pop just like nectar feeding invert they just store it.. giving sick colonys sucrose seems to set them back from what I've seen.. start seeing mites on your bees they have problems why they are bottomless pits right now .. go buy a tote of inverted syrup poor it too your biggest problem yards .. gotta figure each one of those units fixed crash on the first cold front going to cost you 1.000 in lost income next year.. no taxes on overtime you kidding me bee buisness is going to boom .. people putting it on the credit card right now because American worker is punished for working overtime

I wish i could find places to keep bees lol. Also i seen somewhere recently that glyphosate is really rough on the bees unless they are resistant to it. There was a popular beekeeper that was breeding glyphosate resistant bees. I wish i coupd remember his name but i guess the usda came and basically stole all his hives.....

My bees starve to death feeding 1:1 all summer. It's 50% water. It seems like bees consume most of the sugar in 1:1, just dehydrating the water out of it. 1:1 is also twice as many visits filling feeders vs 2:1. One to one has no shelf life. I switched to 2:1 just to cut down on the work and fuel for traveling, bees don't starve if it rains for a week, and they still raise brood while putting on weight. Do a hive inspection feeding 1:1, and they looked packed out. Two days later, they can starve, same for the heft test, and all that water is very misleading.
