It's amazing to think that the fundamental principles did not actually change. We still use today what they talked about, but technology has been simplified so much that we use these things on a daily basis. Simulators are still a bit expensive, but probably will be more accessible in the future, if VR reaches the masses. That's exactly what I would like to do with my channel as well. I want people to share with me my passion for VR, because it's absolutely fantastic! Great video, thank you very much for posting!

Super interesting how this video is 9 years old yet there isn’t much current content rivalling this. Would love to know more about this. I’m convinced we can DIY VR headsets by sourcing telescope and microscope optics . I’m especially intrigued by the thought of adapting focal reducers, as well as the coated optics . Any chance of a new video on this? Thanks so much for making this and sharing your brilliance!

I tried this for the "Shrek 3D" DVD (aka "Shred 4-D", aka "The Ghost of Lord Farquaad"). First huge problem is I couldn't get audio to stay in sync. It kept lagging farther and farther behind, regardless of whether I used the 2D or 2D version as the source for the audio. Second problem is I don't know how to generate output that will actually work with 3D equipment. I was hoping to be able to play this via Plex app on AppleTV to a Sony 3D-capable projector, but I'm willing to try other things (e.g., direct playback from USB thumb drive plugged into blu-ray player, even burning a 3D blu-ray if that's possible). I can't figure out how to do that, though. Of course, if the audio sync can't be fixed, then it's all moot, as it gets _way_ out of sync very quickly.

Is it possible to remove the lenses in order to clean the surface of the LCD screens?
@VRtifacts
@VRtifacts 7 жыл бұрын
There are small holes in the optics housing which are designed for cleaning with compressed air (photo lens quality air.) If you look at the video, at 5:30 I'm pointing to a plastic cube enclosure that holds the LCD attached to the lens assembly. On the sides of that enclosure, there are small rectangles of electrical tape. Carefully peel them back to reveal the blowout holes. The holes are big enough to insert the thin hollow tube that is supplied with a spray can of compressed air. Make sure to open two holes, one for the air inlet and one for an air outlet. Use short puffs of air so there is no condensation from the cold of air expansion. When you're done, you can reapply the same electrical tape, or cut new rectangles of fresh tape.

Does sth. like this also exist for real time conversion (or whatever you wanna call it)? Because nVidia 3d vision just gives you a red and green analgyph 3d but i want a top and bottom 3d. (paying 40$ for 3dtv play is in my opinion way too much for a simple nice-to-have effect so maybe a free alternative exists)

Hi. thanks for the informative video, and your channel. But, i can't get it to work. Neither in my computer running w10 and avisynth 2.6 and virtualdubmod 1.5.10.2 or in another computer runnin w7 with avisynth 2.58 and same virtualdubmod. I'm trying to convert a dvd-sourced video (jean michel jarre oxygene live in your living room anaglyph version). The dvd has a 2d and the anaglyph version. It seems that the 2d version is the right eye. So i begin configuring the script. These were the only settings i changed : anaglyphName = "C:/3dJeanMichel/Oxygene-3d.mpg" PureColName = "C:/3dJeanMichel/Oxygene-2d.mpg" monoName = "C:/3dJeanMichel/Oxygene-2d.mpg" SoundName = "C:/3dJeanMichel/Oxygene-2d.mpg" inputFormat = "RC" isMono = "monoRight" import("C:\3dJeanMichel\AnaExtract.avs") The ripped mpg from the vob has 2 audio tracks, which i selected the linear pcm one. Video is on full processing mode. I selected x264 as the compression. Mkv crashed virtualdubmod, but when selecting avi and ogm the output video is the same as the anaglyph version and i can't seem to find why it isn't processing the video. Can you help me in any capacity ?

+Filipe Lana Managed it. Duh. By opening the script instead of the video. But now i'm stuck in another problem. Managed to use vob2mpb in another computer to "rip" the 2d and 3d video, but the 2d starts 25 frames earlier, and now i need to cut it in order to sync. But how i do it without re-encoding ?

@VRtifacts
@VRtifacts 8 жыл бұрын
+Sushant Kataria This process converts Anaglyph 3D into side by side or top-bottom. It doesn't convert from top-bottom to side by side, but that would be easy to do with AVISYNTH. A good toolkit: www.pantarheon.org/AviSynth3DToolbox/ Or try this very simple sample script: DirectShowSource("TopBottomVideo.m4v";,fps=30, ConvertFPS=True) #Extract top and bottom views as separate videos top=Crop(0,0,0,height/2) bottom=Crop(0,height/2,0,height/2) #Place videos side by side StackHorizontal(top,bottom)

Great tutorial, there's just one issue I'm having. You can see at around 2:30 that in the right image the color is not lining up with the picture. Is there any way to fix that?
@VRtifacts
@VRtifacts 9 жыл бұрын
***** Surprised nobody caught that before. Not really a flaw in the technique, but rather a glitch in my demo. Bear with me on this explanation. The source video files were either MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, I forget, but both motion compression techniques have key frames spaced a few seconds apart. That's fine when you're playing continuously from start to finish, and works fine when you process a whole sequence with AVISynth. However, when I scroll to a particular still frame in VirtualDubMod, as you see in the demo around 2:30, unless I've scrolled exactly to a MPEG key frame, the pair of video files wind up a few frames out of sync, and at the still frame shown, the chroma is off by several frames, coloring a red blotch where the alien's head was about 1/10 of a second before. To do a walk through demo pausing and scrolling the AVISynth process I really should have converted the files to a format that doesn't use motion compression, perhaps M-JPEG or just RAW. Since I started with Blu-Ray, the converted files would have been huge. Five years ago, when I made this demo, I didn't have the disc space (or the patience) to do the conversion. Someday I'll redo this technique, probably in After Effects, and now that I've got a surfeit of disc terabytes and a decent render rack, the whole thing will look a lot better. Originally I considered using After Effects, but decided to do it all in free-ware. AVISynth and VirtualDubMod have become fairly stale, so it's probably time to move on. Is the free-ware aspect of this technique important to the people who are trying to use this technique? In any event, this is really a compositing technique, perfect for After Effects. If you can read the commented code at vrtifacts.com/dump-those-silly-colored-3d-glassess/ try to ignore all the special case if-else stuff that deals with different colored glasses and left-right swapping. The meat of the technique is fairly easy to grasp. In the past five years, so many 3D movies have been released in a side-by-side format, not anaglyph. For the most part, this technique is only useful for "rescuing" old 3D movie releases only available in anaglyph where the studios have either lost the dual film strips, or refuse to restore and release them. There's quite a few that fit the bill from the 50's 3D bubble, again in the 70's, and also many early 3D pr0n flix. Easy access to these on VHS, but that's the hardest format to do a decent conversion. 16mm and 35mm prints are out there and in the studio vaults, but not so easy to come by. Thanks for the heads up!
@quadrplax
@quadrplax 9 жыл бұрын
VRtifacts Wow, thanks for replying to a comment on such an old video! So, are you saying that the color issues won't be there in the final product? It could have been my fault too, I realized after that my 2D movie starting time was a couple frames off of my 3D movie and haven't redone it yet. Also, I thought that converting the video was bad because it messed with the colors. I'm guessing that freeware is important for this because, as you said, many movies are available in side-by-side so this mostly is useful for people who bought the anaglyph version and later want side-by-side.
@VRtifacts
@VRtifacts 9 жыл бұрын
***** Be aware that sometimes the 2D release is edited slightly differently than the 3D release, resulting in the videos becoming a little (or a lot) out of sync. Your best bet is to line up both videos on a video editor timeline to verify they stay in sync from beginning to end. Maybe use the free version of Lightworks? I've found that most of the edit differences are in the opening credits and/or the first few minutes of the film. The closing credits are often different, but unless there's something interesting going on there, you could ignore them. As mentioned before, most video editing software has time sync problems with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 source files. You may not even be able to reliably sync the two files until you've converted them to M-JPEG or other non-motion based compression formats. Adobe Premiere and After Effects are really wonky with the motion compression formats.
@quadrplax
@quadrplax 9 жыл бұрын
VRtifacts Yeah, it seems for me there's just 3 extra black frames at the beginning of the 2D version. In my case I have a DVD, so it has MPEG-2 source files (I'm used MakeMKV). I'm using VirtualDubMod like in this tutorial. I'm not actually sure how to fix the frame issue, VirtualDub doesn't seem to like me opening MKVs directly and VOB2MPG resulted in corrupted files for me. how would you recommend fixing this?
@VRtifacts
@VRtifacts 9 жыл бұрын
***** Suggest you convert your sources first. Try Avidemux, avidemux.sourceforge.net/ and use the video output format (FF)HuffYUV. It's a lossless compression and should be frame accurate. However the files will be big!

I've gotten motion sick from 3D games I first saw Doom on the 32x... and I owned a Rift DK1 and now a DK2... and my condition is even worse than in this video. I won't even attempt to use my Rift without taking motion sickness pills, but even with them I'll only last 10-mins or less before I'm ready to puke. Now most people aren't going to experience that, but nothing that they presented here is an exaggeration - in fact they underplay it quite a bit. Again for me, and I get motion sick extremely easily, VR is the fastest most consistent way to wipe me out for a day, and the idea of going 40-mins, I think I'd actually die.
