A lot of inaccuracies and incorrect information. First of all modern ARM and x86 chips are very similar. Both use micro-ops. This means that an instruction is split up into multiple smaller operations. The decoding of these instructions works slightly differently among the two ISAs but it doesn't change the fact that ARM is not a true RISC architecture. It is important to state that ARM even has vector extensions similar to x86's avx family of instructions. The reason ARM chips are more energy efficient is simply due to them being designed for efficiency from the start and subsequently scaled up if needed. X86 has historically been designed for high performance use cases, only to then be scaled down accordingly. The fact ARM CPU cores are usually found in SOCs with lots of accelerators for specific tasks only adds to the power efficiency. Also both can do everything, we are still talking about fully featured ISAs for general purpose processors here, not something like a GPU.

Terrible analogy. RISC and CISC processors can do the same things. This is a better analogy: Before Henry Ford created the assembly line, car manufacturers would assemble cars by hand at one station, with a team of workers working on the car from start to finish. Then came Ford's assembly line, and now instead of one team building an entire car, workers were assigned specific jobs, like attaching wheels or installing engines. Think of the assembly line as RISC processors and instead of time savings for car manufacturing, it's energy for processors. To achieve the same tasks as CISC's more powerful and complex instructions, RISC processors execute multiple smaller instructions in sequence. Again, RISC and CISC are more alike than different; the only difference (besides instruction sets, of course) is the energy efficiency. Going back to the car manufacturing example, regardless of which manufacturing method you used to build a car, a car will be built. Same goes for RISC and CISC processors - regardless of which processor you use to do any task, they can do it. The only concerning factor is energy efficiency. Also regarding optimization, the reason why a lot of RISC chips seem to do a lot of things better than CISC chips is because ARM licenses their chip architecture to companies, and from there these companies can add hardware encoders/decoders to their licensed chips to do specific tasks really well. For example, Apple's M series laptops are very good at video editing - some may say the best. The reason for this isn't because the M series laptops use RISC processors per se, rather it's because Apple's M series chips have video encoders that are separate from the CPU that are really good at video encoding.
@RaffyHalim
@RaffyHalim Ай бұрын
Oooh- love that analogy! Thanks for sharing that one - if I ever make a follow up video on the topic, will definitely use and credit you. Yes- agreed on the additional encoders/decoders/ NPUs that are added after - I always find it a hard balance to talk about things in depth vs. keeping simple. I used those 2 examples (mainly didn't think of the assembly line one as you've described) which seemed to work best at that level of detail when people asked me about it in real life. Thanks for taking the time to comment - very much appreciated!
@mdayaan7573
@mdayaan7573 Ай бұрын
And to add to the last part you talked about Apple uses a SoC which makes their platform even more efficient as compared to CISC architecture as in them your system will have a different cpu, gpu and ram from all sorts of different manufacturers, but in Apple you have one combined SoC fully optimised by apple, they control the whole pipeline, from the hardware to the OS and that's why their machines are so efficient
@RaffyHalim
@RaffyHalim Ай бұрын
Yeah - I actually was going to talk about Apple and their approach being so tightly integrated, but it was getting to be a long video and the Apple folk don't really ask these questions to me so I don't have a frame of reference to provide any value there. I do think what they've managed to pull with even the first M1 chip was fairly amazing technical marvel

Uff, as a developer I've been just as unimpressed by Windows on ARM this time around. This is now the second time that MS has *absolutely* bombed the launch of a major ARM platform. They just do not seem to care. The "preview" of 64 bit Windows emulation didn't come until 2021. That's NINE years after they launched Windows on ARM! It _still_ doesn't work with most GPU accelerated applications either, so good luck if you want to play games. (Maybe they'll fix it in 9 years...) As for Qualcom, maybe they aquired Apple's best chip designers, but they'll failed to deliver a platform from the deal. They were going to sell devkits, but it didn't start shipping until a month after the target Copilot+ laptop hardware did! What on earth was the point?" They were awfully expensive for throwaway hardware too, and I can't imagine many developers bothered, especially with how little ARM software seems to be available on Windows. Then lets talk about performance, supposedly half of the point. Native ARM code just does not consistently run faster or even more power efficiently on the Snapdragon X chips than AMD's latest mobile chips. At this point it's hard to say if it's software issues on MSs part, driver issues on Qualcom's, or if the hardware just didn't live up to the hype. It doesn't really matter though until they fix it. Speaking personally, I just don't see the point bothering to support Windows on Arm when there are much more stable and "popular" platforms like Mac and Linux sitting at a few percent each. (and yes, I'm quite aware of how painful it is to support Apple in 2024) For a historical perspective, Apple has actually transferred architectures 3 times including m68k to PPC, and they all went (relatively) smoothly compared to whatever this is.
@RaffyHalim

I didn't realise about the 'extra' transfer on the Apples side. I've run into some compatibility issues and only have the previous gen Intel Surface to compare to rather than latest AMD device, but for the basic day to day stuff, I've actually been pleasantly impressed by both performance and battery life. That said, part of the reason I'm doing the basics is because I can't get Gigapixel to run or my video editor to recognise the Adreno GPU. The biggest surprise for me was how little performance difference there was on battery vs plugged in. In the older hardware, it was like running 2 different machines. I hope they continue to expand their support- agree that it could've been done a lot better. Count me as cautiously optimistic even though MS seems to have gone a bit quiet on this side of Copilot+ PCs

Looks pretty crummy to me .. maybe the interior decorators need to have a visit to China ..learn about real interior design ..🤣🤣

It's certainly a bit dated for sure, but also didn't really get to capture it in a good light while avoiding staff/other guests. I think they're slowly revamping all the lounges again

Didn't take it as rude at all! Yeah I was lucky to visit a few lounges around the world and by modern standards, even comparing to the Singapore international lounges are more updated. But I think the whole point is to have a quiet, low head count lounge with similar level of service to the international first lounge but in domestic. For that, it's a functional lounge. And I don't drink, but I'm told the booze selection is great

In person it doesn't look too bad, but it is starting to show its age. It felt like that was the main perk: it's not ever overcrowded

I found the international business lounge at Melbourne to be quite good. But never got to the chairman's lounge for domestic and I'd rather minimize the time at the airport for a less than 2 hour flight to anywhere except Perth and Darwin.

So this is the fuss with our Prime Minister and having access to the lounge … I think for people of his status this is perfect Still a bit weird you need validation from a lounge to make you so excited… 😂 I think it’s this exclusivity that makes it a bit of an enigma .. I’m not that impressed with the menu .. but nice to escape from the masses whilst travelling.. I’ll do that in a private jet which is much more exciting for me ! Thanks for the video.

I definitely get excited about things like this! But I tend to be a bit odd like that 🤣 Yeah it's just a private space at the end of the day. If you're fortunate to fly private, then yup, your past needing chairman's lounge

That’s ok mate and it’s why that exclusivity sucks people in for status . I really recommend Singapore Airlines VIP lounge areas

Great review, thank you. I just got myself a used one for when I want to record a video on the fly. The sound appears to be great, and I'm only missing that I wish it had a recording on the transmitter for extra safety and an input for lavalier.

Not an expert on this, but I think that's a special glass. I'm sure they'll eventually be out, but I haven't seen anything as good as what Samsung currently has
