A declaration with tragic consequences for millions of non-Japanese across the Asia-Pacific region and ultimately on the Japanese themselves. Call it US President FDR's provocation or Western colonial hypocrisy if some might contend, but there's no denying that imperial Japan, especially its military and civilian decision makers, were collectively responsible for harboring territorial ambitions, (nationalistic) pride and accumulating power for years, interacting in a combustible mix that narrowed Japan's options for peace. Ironically, it was the Tiger of Malaya, Tomoyuki Yamashita, who had earlier called for Japan to extricate itself from an unwinnable war on mainland China and to maintain friendly relations with the USA and with Great Britain. Yet, his call didn't resonate with PM Hideki Tojo and other war mongers in the IJA and IJN. When will mankind ever learn from history?

My dad had been in the Army Air Corp. Shot down , captured and tortured by the Japanese. He taught me this song and told me about his war experiences when I was six.

RESPECT! I cannot imagine what your dad endured. - My uncle flew a P-47 Thunderbolt with the 61st Fighter Squadron in WWII. In Nov. 1943 he was 'hit' and crippled over Bremen, Germany but fortunately made it back. Growing up, he told me about the atrocities of the Germans and (worse) Japanese. All I can say is, please tell your dad, "Thank you!" if he's still with us.
