Southwest PA. We play “Cinch” same exact rules except you get to draw. Ex. Hearts are called trump. Keep trump and draw. Makes jack less likely to sleep.

My family plays nine rounds pursuing varying combinations of 3-card sets and 4-card runs, from six cards dealt up to 14 in hand at deal, however the last hand has special rules, you must "lay down" two sets and two runs, and discard your entire hand in one turn, this special rule for the final hand can completely upset the final score so of course it's a fun hand. May I draw has a two-card penalty.

I’ll tell you a little secret on how to win this game. If you understand this secret, you will have a nearly unfair advantage over the other players. So much of an advantage that it mostly takes away the fun. You see, that it is only on the very last hand of the game, that your primary goal should be to try to win. On every other hand, your primary goal should be to try not to have the lowest hand. Except for the last hand, it doesn’t matter who wins the hand (with the exception of someone having 31). You should knock, not when you think that you have the best hand, but rather as quickly as you think that you don’t have the lowest hand. This is the only game I can think of, for which trying to win, isn’t the best strategy. Remember, if more than two people are playing, you don’t need a very good hand in order to not have the worst hand. The crazy thing about it, is that we are so conditioned to try to win, that even if you explain this to people, most won’t understand and they will continue to play to win.

Ah, so true. Having played this game for decades, it is not common to end a game with someone collecting 31, but instead ending due to someone knocking. It is not a bad decision to knock ASAP with just 2 matching suited cards with a count of say 15 or more. It is probable that someone was delt a "rainbow" hand (that's a 3 cards all diff suits) with a max count of 10. Thx much for watching.

Grew up in Western Massachusetts. Knew it by 3 names. Pitch, foremost, Setback, and Hi Lo Jack

I grew up in California, and I live in California now, and I've never heard of people playing Setback or Pitch here. I wonder why not! I lived in Connecticut for a few years, I learned the game, and people called it Setback.

My question is do you have to bid three when you have Ace Duece?
@tomhowell544

Basic game min/opening bid is 2 regardless of what you have in your hand. Ace/deuce trump only is a tough hand to win 3.

I'm 74 Yrs. Old And Can Still Remember My Folks Talking About Playing The Setback Card Game In The 1950's And Early 1960's . We're In The Hills Of Appalachia Here In West Virginia. They'd Usually Get Together With My Mom's Brothers Down In The Hollers Of Jackson County And Play Setback Or Rummy Till Weee Hours Of The Morning. Us Kids Would Just Play And Have Old Fashioned Fun While Our Parents Played Cards All Night And Drank Coffee.

Weren't those old times great. We were doing the same stuff in ct. People were entertained not just by what we did. But we did things together. No monitors, maybe if young people today interacted in reality instead of virtual reality our world might be a little better and safer. It's my belief we wouldn't have some of the crazy things happening. If people were together and kids played outside. Anyway table games and card's are a great way to spend some time. 👍☮️

I remember playing setback here in New England in the 70s. Friends, family. Playing was a great time. No equipment or technology. Just music people and some socializing.good times. In those days we talked facing each other. I knew lots of people who played. Young and old. Most people now don't know what I'm talking about. I think how some cards could help fill a snow day. Good times. I think I will play this weekend. Maybe teach a couple people.☮️👍🙂✌️
