By gains, you mean realised gains. This is when we sell an asset or exchange it for another asset. You subtract the purchase costs from the sale proceeds to calculate the realised gain. Unrealised gains are where an asset goes up in value but there is no conversion to another asset. Such increases in value are not taxable. There is then the Buy, Hold, Borrow method. Buy an asset and borrow against it as leverage while it appreciates. Apparently it’s how the rich live.
