I remember as a kid we would be at my grandparents house on Sunday evenings, and Mister Broge would come on Ed Sullivan. The adults would all be laughing. I was too young to get his jokes back then. What great talent he was. I am glad these clips are available today so those of who missed it the first time around can laugh now.

I know the Mozart and opera routines, I’ve seen him live in Boston and Washington, and yet I never tire of this magnificent Dane, a refugee from Hitler-occupied Europe, with the perennial twinkle in his eye. He was a concert level pianist, but we only get to hear tiny bits of his virtuosity. The pity always is that he didn’t play more… but had he done so we would have been deprived of these classic and delightful skits. What a gift he was to America and the world.

Victor Borge and George Carlin, 2 different sides of comedy, 2 of the greatest comedians to ever stood on a stage. RIP to both of you.

You know, as a late boomer I don’t know. Would Hitler have found the beginning of Borge’s act funny? It’s so late and carefree. that’s gone from modern stand-up or modern comedy. Comedy classically always was a bad situation rectified, in other words a bright turn in the upwards direction.

In the sixties, I’m old, I worked a few blocks from Carnegie Hall where I would go to to catch the crosstown bus. Carnegie Hall would post info about free tickets to rehearsals so it was a great treat to see Borge in rehearsal mode being wildly funny. It was great as I had always enjoyed watching him on television.
