Because it's an algebraic formula where only certain numbers make it work.

I had a vaguely similar idea recently except it's played on a 5x5 grid and players choose any number from 1-4 and the first to get a line of 12 wins. It also doesn't necessarily have to be the full length, so you can win with a 4-4-4 triple. I also had an idea for a (hopefully) more advanced version that's played on a 7x7 and if you get a line that adds to 7 then you can move that line of numbers in a king's move.

It works because if you chose 22, there is a 2 in the upper left of box A, there is a 4 in the upper left of box B, and there is a 16 in the upper left of box E. 2 + 4 + 16 = 22

It doesn't matter who is what color. If you put down the 3rd number that makes 15, you win.

Total strategy. Kinda like chess where you might give up a lesser number for a bigger one.
