I admire most of Barber’s music but i will never understand how this dreary mess won a Pulitzer. What i do understand is why it disappeared for half a century. Except for “Must the winter come so soon” and the quintet there is virtually nothing of musical, lyrical interest, the orchestral accompaniment is for the most part cacophonous and formless. Hard to believe this is the same composer who wrote the sublime Adagio for Strings and the gorgeous Violin Concert.
