I would use an old brake rotor instead of the plywood. You could then take a 10 pound weight off.

Great job and thanks for sharing. After studying your build and the AMICK, I'm going to build one using your ideas. (I'm simply not paying $400 for an AMICK.). Fortunately, I have 4 - ten pound weights from an old weight set which will save me quite a lot. If you don't have these weights another option to save money would be to check thrift shops, garage sales and online market places like Craigs List or Offer Up. I thought about using brake rotors but not sure how hard it will be to drill them for the U bolts. I think plywood will be just fine because how many times a year are you going to use it? And I already have some scrap plywood and it will be much easier to work with. As to the tines, it looks like they are going to take some time to fabricate. Oh well. The one thing I think I'll do a little differently is to sharpen the tines at a steeper angle hopefully to get better penetration into the soil. The one question I did have is why 7 tines? Have to tried 6 or 8? Another lawn product I was working on before I saw your aerator is a lawn roller. Have you made one? My plan is to use a 12" Quikrete Quik-Tube. I'll cut it down to 24", make round plugs out of plywood for each end with holes in them to center the axel I'll make out of steel pipe. The 24" tube should take 1 60 lb. bag of Quikrete cement. I'll make sure the axel is centered as I mix and pour in the cement using the end pieces. After the cement is cured, I'll fabricate a handle probably out of scrap 2"x4"s I already have. I'm estimating it will cost me around $25 - $30. By the way, my Home Depot charges $20 for a 4 hour roller rental. I'm happy to share my roller idea with you incase you want to do a video.

I finally finished this project and it works! I ended up using tines from amazon and I needed to add 2 spacers about 3 inches in length to both ends of the galvanized steel pipe because I had too much pipe sticking out for whatever reason. I am using 5 lb weights (40 pounds total) for my lawn…so maybe the 10 pound weights you used are a lot thicker? Anyways, tested it out and I have 2 inch deep aerator holes! Could maybe adjust my tines a bit to make the holes deeper but I think from what I’ve read 2 inch holes should be sufficient. Thanks again!

Just thinking out loud, couldn't you make front or back wheels for your lawn mower and remove 2 of the original wheels on the lawn mower or find a way to snap them on temporarily to the existing front or back wheels (that would be gold, no need to remove anything from the existing lawn more, snap on aerator wheels), add these customer "aerator wheels", cut the grass and aerate at the same time or just take advantage of the existing weight of the lawn mower and the handlebars already created on the lawn mower. You're already there with this proof of concept invention, you've shown it yourself in this video that the the wheel with the aerator spikes works and produces nice size soil cores.

I don’t know where they get there soil bagged at. The reason I googled this is because I have purchased many bags of Scott’s lawn soil over the years for my lawn to fill in holes my dog has dug or low spots in the yard and have found all kinds of trash in it. Not so much the mulch like you have but things like broken glass a few other things. I don’t know if they have been scooping up from a landfill at one point and that’s how it got in there just like the wood chips you have. Even if you read the reviews on it from Lowe’s there has been other people complain about the same issues. I would like to see how Scott’s turf lawn soil is made on modern marvels history channel episode or something. It defines could use improvements on there quality control

Or you could just rent one from HomeDepot for $75 for 4hrs, or $100 for full day. You'd still have money left over in your pocket, plus all the time saved from shopping, fabricating, assembling, and the time it took running that thing so many passes back and forth. Time is money, and this takes up a LOT of time. Then you have to store it till next year, and probably repair it.
@vandit0o0o
@vandit0o0o 4 ай бұрын
Yes, renting is definitely an option for some I agree. My DIY is mostly for those who want the satisfaction of building one of their own , not have to spend more money having to rent one if they want to core aerate multiple times a year, not have to load and unload a heavy machine multiple times to and from the store and have to have fuel available. My DIY is still cheap, very easy to build, lite weight, can be disassembled to a compact size for easy storage and very easy to use (to include being customizable). And since building mine almost 1.5 yrs ago has yet to break down or need any fixing or adjusting. To include no need for fuel and changing of the oil and filter. Sure it takes me just a little longer to core aerator compared to mowing...with just one wheel. Once I add the second wheel, it will cut down on my time even more. Your observations are valid, thank you for your feedback. Happy core aerating. 👍

@Midnight_Gardener 4 ай бұрын
Renting is not cheaper in any sense. It’s definitely easier. You have to rent every single time. So two rentals and you’re already over. This can be used over and over and over and over. And the guy just wants to show ppl how to do things for themselves, why try to talk him out of it. If you do commercial landscaping and your only choices are (1)cheap, garbage spike aerator… (2) extremely expensive powered core aerators (3) spend $120 on a rental, spend gas, time, energy, and headache picking it up, doing paper work, etc. and have to aerate as many yards as possible in a single day just to barely break even or just make a small profit. This can be carried on the truck at any time and simply done at any time, as needed. The dollar cost and the convenience cost will pay for itself almost immediately and do nothing but bring profits.

@TheEchelon I don't really care. I don't have a big enough lawn to need this anyways. I am just saying that not everyone has these tools or needs them around. For what everyday reason would you need a tool that can cut through a metal pipe? I would even say, who needs to saw plywood regularly? More like enthusiasts or hobby people. We can have a debate about what are common tools and not common tools. I suppose we can diy a house with the right tools and skills. All I am saying is that the 160 price is not entirely accurate if u don't got the tools that's why people have to pay the big bucks.
