Is 3oz of each hardener and resin required for a proper mix?

Great clip. I’m new and haven’t done one yet but I have a rod I want to do. Do I just wet and dry the blank and remove as much of the top coat as I can without going too deep and rubbing through it do I have to scrape the top coat off first then smooth out with wet n dry ?? I think I’ve seen something somewhere about using a Stanley knife blade to scrape them back Thanks in advice Mal

Thanks for sharing this. First thought, would it help to heat the decal first to soften it? Also... I have a Cadence Specimen rod (coloured blank) with an awful maker's graphic which I'd like to remove. It lies between two whippings above the handle, so I was thinking of masking those whippings off, using acetone and a cloth (or 0000 wire wool) to remove everything between them, including the rod's paint, then airbrushing a fresh base colour before applying an alternative decal. Does that all sound sorta feasible? Cheers, Steve

Fantastic set of tutorial video's. I'm about to start rebuilding a few of my older rods to get some practice and this channel will be my go to. I've looked around for a supplier near me who sells Bonda seal and the only one I can find is the blue tin Bonda wood seal. Would this be suitable or do I need to source tne red tin.

It's currently fixed for fixed spool, I have been wondering about using a sliding seat over the wrap! (I'm looking at a swift sliding seat) Do you think this would work ok or should I keep it fixed? Any thoughts would be much appreciated, Martin

Is it ok to aplly bondaseal directly on the decal? Or epoxy coat first? T.i.a
@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67992 жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge, the decal will need an epoxy coat first. Bonda can destroy a decal if not careful. The one in the video had a slight epoxy/varnish coat over it to start with.

Very useful series of videos thanks. I've got an old Glass fibre beachcaster that I keep threatening to rebuild & restore. Any recommendations for the best paint to use as it is a horrible shade of yellow and I would like to paint it black before Bondaseal and new rings etc. Stay safe & well!

Bondaseal will attack most paints. If you use car paint, apply a 2k car lacquer instead of Bondaseal.

The chucks were purchased in the UK from rodringsandthings which are Pacbay 240 volts. They can also be purchased from Mudhole in USA 110 Volts. Hope that helps.

High mate, did you use any kind of sealer on the fuji threads? I tried using fuji white and it turns silver.
@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67993 жыл бұрын
The Fuji thread is NOCP, so has the thread lock, colour preserver already built into the thread. You can still coat with CP as it won't harm it, but allow a bit of time to dry before coating with epoxy.

@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67993 жыл бұрын
The Gen4Resin is easier to work with and a bit more forgiving.
@toadleap82964 жыл бұрын
Hi, great video! I would like to ask you 2 questions, if you do not mind ;-) First, in the video, you did not apply heat to the epoxy resin to remove bubbles. Do you use some kind of special and very liquid epoxy resin, which does not create bubbles? Second, when do you remove the masking tapes? Just after applying the resin when it is still liquid, or do you wait a few hours when it begins to harden a little?
@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67994 жыл бұрын
The Resin is the Gen4Resin that has extreme air release technology built in so requires minimal heat. I remove the masking tape within about 20-30 minutes. Hope that helps. PS we (PierPoint) are the UK distributors for the Gen4Resin. Just contact us via Facebook or our Website for ordering.

@@pierpoint-customrodbuildin6799 Hi, thank you for your answer. I watched the video again and indeed you mentioned several times the technical specificity of the resin (but I did not catch it the first time ;-) since I used to use the most commonly sold resins for rodbuilders). One last question if you do not mind: is the Gen4Resin suited for coating thread wraps? or should I use it on decals only?

As a new rod builder here, what is the purpose of the bondaseal? Is it a finish for a bare blank when refurbishing and sanded blanks or is there another reason? Thanks for the clear tutorial!! Richaed from Kansas;)
@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67994 жыл бұрын
The Bondaseal coat is usually applied after the rub down. It provides a nice hard wearing clear coat in preparation of the guide foot wraps.

@pierpoint-customrodbuildin67994 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the vids. You can use Bondaseal as a single coat for lighter rods, but the epoxy gives a better all round finish. The Bondaseal has a very short pot life as well and can dry very quickly. Some builders use it to seal the threads as a first coat.
