Very informative. I’ve looked at multiple sources but why dont people talk about the awful cramps? I am 7 days post op and those keep me from sleeping and getting the rest I need.

Not much pain for me. Painting a shed a week after second one and didn't need sticks or anything and also had a bone graft. Discharged by physio after couple of weeks after two circuits of the gym.

Sometime ago, but; your 📹 popped up. Just a question, is a knee & hip replacement best done same time? To be steady balanced. Pain comes goes, now have referral from PRIMARY DR. to 👀 ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON. Definitely walking with walker in public. 🚌 SECURITY. SAFELY. Home just a duck slow wobble walk. Ramp & slow incline stairs built 4 me, assistance program. MH trlr.😊

15 years ago I had both knees replaced. I had to have a blood transfusion and felt quite ill. I went home after one week. It took two or three weeks recovering, but since then have never looked back. Sometimes my knees ache a bit at night but otherwise it has been fantastic. I was about seventy when I had the operation and I live alone.

If you have a very long wait for surgery as is the case on the NHS, your knee will significantly deteriorate over time , as will your muscles & your pain levels. During any lengthy wait, your mobility will suffer, walking will cause pain, as your body starts to compensate for the knee pain. You will start feeling pain in other parts of your body such as your back, your shoulders, your feet etc. If you can afford to go private, do it - but most people - me included- can’t afford this, so we just have to muddle through. What has helped me enormously is regularly seeing an experienced remedial massage therapist (private - not NHS) who helped loosen off the tight muscles, compensations and holding patterns, kept me moving & also gave me a tailored daily exercise routine & it helped with my pain. I also didn’t feel so helpless. Going to the local pool for non weight bearing exercise helped a lot. Even just walking in the water helps, or just standing in the water to do leg lifts etc. You can do things in the water that are excruciatingly painful on dry land (eg squats & leg raises) but which are manageable in the pool. And eat well - chuck the sugars & carbs, junk food. Just eat lots of fresh veggies, fruit , drink lots of water and herbal teas. Gently massage your knees with arnica and comfrey oil twice daily. Ice packs are good for severe pain if your knees are on fire. Stay warm and try to stay positive. Good luck.

I have both knees affected by wear and tear, have had 5 injections with Ostenil, of which only 3 helped for a short while. As a Dutch district nurse in France I am very reluctant to have replacements as I learned during a study day, the success rate is only 50%, which I found very discouraging, so for me a knee replacement is the very very last option. Through my son I was put in contact with an expert clinical physio who has a superb reputation with regards to joints, and experience with professional sportmen/women at home and abroad. I had a consultation and was very impressed by his professionalism and clarity. He explained my wear/where and tear and the options to help me. I opted for a newish and promising injection, which is expensive, as not reimbursed, but is not rejected by the body, nor absorbed nor degraded. I've had it done a few months ago and start to notice a difference. Obviously it's still early days as this product, Arthrosamid, keeps working for years as studies have shown. So before you make an irreversable decision (replacement) make sure you've explored all the options. I think replacement is the last choice and can still be done after injections if necessairy;

I did the physio exercises as soon as I first got pain in my knee with arthritis, 6yrs on through exercise I have built muscle on my thighs and calves, which in turn pulls the knee bones away from each other and stops grinding and pain. I do not want a knee op so I am determined with exercise I never will, I hope. Cannot recommend enough, pilates, yoga, cycle, gym, cross trainer, swimming, walking, stretching. Do what you like or do all of them, but try to do something every day. Also helps with all other age related ailments, heart, lungs, organs, fat deposits etc.

I’m doing all I can to avoid knee surgery, and I’m working with what I have. I’m strengthening my glute muscles, I’m watching videos and people are building up their glute muscles and avoiding knee surgery. I want to be one of those people, I’ve made the mistake of working on my quads, instead of my glutes. 😊

I am over 7 MONTHS post op and still in a LOT of pain and swelling. If I had known it was this bad I would probably have gone another route or just lived with the bone on bone and arthritis. 5 MONTHS of PT and now am working with a personal trainer which is costing me a fortune, but I have to do something. Please pray for my recovery.

It’s horrible painful. If you can take Codeine you’re going to do okay. If not, it’s horrible painful. It takes a year to begin to better. But it’s always stiff. I’m post 12 years. I need another but, I’m waiting until there’s a new treatment. Got to be something better!!!!!!

It shows what money can buy to help. Judi is saying how important physio is, okay I saw them in hospital as they were trying to get me to do a flight of stairs which day 3 I did. Discharged and saw a physio for 15 minutes on day 12 who then said "bend it, straighten it okay you'll need to book another appointment on line. Goodbye . Felt totally let down by the NHS. No physio available where I live it's pathetic. So sorry Judi this is just not real life

Interesting, I have been very sporty all my life, Tennis, Cycling, Football, running, swimming etc etc at a competitive level. I am very determined and really missed my sport and could hardly walk. It has been very nearly 4 months and I can report that whilst I could climb stairs without pain after 2 months, it was very difficult to be comfortable for sleeping. I still have a lot of pain although it is getting better all the time. I can ride my road racing bikes and mountain bikes at a good speed and can climb steep hills, the soft tissue is still very painful though, especially if I bend my leg past the confortable angle at which point my heel is still nowhere near my thigh. I expect to have soft tissue pain for at least another 8 months but the operation is still really worth it. Swimming is back to normal and I can easily do a fast kilometer in open water and running is ok but painful, I look as though I have been kicked in the leg. Getting out of the car is the worst activity. I am 70 and had the Operation in late April, I live in France now and we dont have to wait to see a doctor here and Operations are done so quickly after diagnosis, I dont know why the UK dont follow the french system. Incidently, I have a full size snooker room/table but I was unable to stand continuously for one frame of snooker until and 10 weeks after surgery although now I am ok for a whole afternoon if my wife allowed it 🙂...everyone is different but mine seems to be taking much longer than Dame Judi's...thanks for the video

You must do "NHS CHOOSE & BOOK" which means that you can have your knee replacements or any referral at a Private Hospital and you don't have to pay. Look up the Private Hospitals and choose your Consultant ans make sure that they do "NHS CHOOSE & BOOK" then tell your G. P this is the referral that you want.
