Knee Replacement
Mr Monk was recommended to me by a friend in the film industry who had worked with him for a long time. We first met on the set of Philomena as my knee condition was worsening.
My knee operation went very smoothly, by 6 weeks after the surgery I was able to go to the Premiere and very few people realised I’d had the operation.
My knee has continued to improve and now I have almost forgotten I’ve had the operation. I got to know Mr Monk well and was impressed by his professionalism, kindness, sense of humour and absolute discretion which is particularly important to me.
The operation has been a complete success and I’ve recommended him to my friends and colleagues.

I’ve had both knees replaced 10 years ago for the first one, 5 years ago for the second one. I’m 86 now and can honestly say that I’ve had no problems. They were done at Wythenshaw hospital Manchester. They were absolutely marvellous and I can’t recommend them enough. Perhaps I should also add, I had a triple bypass there also. Maybe I could get a season ticket for parking.

When you have an arthritic knee, everyday it will get a little worse. When you have had it replaced, everyday it will get a little better. However, post surgery is extremely painful and you think you have made a massive mistake. The pain eventually disappears until you realise it was the best thing you ever did.
@HeidiSue60

Yes, that’s where I am now: what a horrible mistake I’ve made. Today seems like it will be a depressed day and that was my first thought when I jolted awake at 4:00 am. And when this attitude comes along I fight it even harder. But for now, I only wish I could turn back the clock. I’d do ANYTHING else. Not TKR.

@@sarahneate7548 I'm a 68 year old woman and had a partial knee replacement and now im 9 weeks Post surgery. I had the same same negative attitude at week 1. Only now im beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At PT yesterday I got up to 110 flexion. The goal is 120. I cried almost every day since the surgery. Worst thing ever. Some advice-- watch your extension keep that leg straight. do your excersises. If you don't you'll end up with a limp. Go on youtube for new ideas on recovery and physical therapy for a total knee replacements. Ice and elevate after excersises. Take your medication one hour before PT. Don't rush to do physical work. You'll just get swollen again. This is a slow process i still have pain -but much less-and its still hard to sleep because I can't turn over yet. I just got back from a two week trip to Hawaii with my grandson which I couldn't cancel. I still managed to have a good time. The doctor told me I would be all set at six weeks but that wasn't really true. Only now at nine weeks people are noticing how good I am walking in I am feeling much better - 75% better than where you are now. It really does get better and you will be happy in the end

I had a TKR at 74. The first few weeks were very painful - nights were the most difficult time. But persistent exercises and walking paid off. It was only a few weeks before I was able to walk over two miles. I found that the flexibility in the knee continued to improve over an 18 month period. It is now 3.5 years and I am delighted with the knee which had been extremely painful before the operation.

My poor husband had the “bone on bone” issue for quite awhile and it was HORRIBLE to see him in so much pain. And he put on quite a bit of weight because he couldn’t move and exercise like he usually always had. So he was in this vicious cycle of …. When the Ortho Docs would say…”Well lose 40lbs and we’ll do the surgery “ Well that was pretty much a HUGE FRUSTRATION b/c he couldn’t exercise, thus he couldn’t lose the lbs. But THANK GOD ALMIGHTY our prayers were answered when we found a Brilliant Doctor that would actually fashioned a joint to fit the knee, rather than just use “stock replacement joints”. It changed our lives. He did so well that he had the other side done and he now out of knee pain. So “PLEASE, PLEASE keep on searching for your perfect Doctor. Because not just any old one will due. And BTW, Love Dame Judy so much. 💞

Thank you for this comment. I'm happy that your husband is doing so well. I too had one doctor say I had to lose 40 lbs. before he would do the surgery. (I was 80 lbs. overweight at the time). I found another surgeon who had done many, many knee replacements and he said there was no problem doing the surgery for someone my size. He didn't use a special knee joint because I have small knees. Everything worked out fine and I was able to be more active and actually lost 40 lbs. I just had my 2nd knee done three weeks ago. One thing I noticed is that recovery time takes much longer because of the weight - I don't remember how long it took for that first knee but it was much longer than other people. But I should be able to be even more active and lose even more weight this time. I'm 63.

I had a terrible experience with bilateral total knee replacement. It was 3 years ago, and I still have trouble walking.I asked my surgeon if it would get any better. He said, "No. That's as good as it gets." Unfortunately, he used stainless steel knee replacements which are heavy and cumbersome instead of Titanium because that's what Medicare will pay for. I would never recommend him to anyone for any type of orthopedic surgery. I also contracted an infection in the hospital that they didn't pick up until I was in the rehab facility and was running a high fever. Total incompetence on the part of the hospital staff.

I had right knee replacement surgery 5 months ago. 2nd knee 7 weeks ago. I did lots of water exercises before surgery and as soon as Dr released me to go back to the pool which was about 6 weeks after surgery. I only took extra strength Tylenol for pain. That’s it. I had PT for 6 weeks right after surgery. I am back in the pool exercising vigorously. I don’t swim, I exercise. Knees feel great. Unfortunately my body is riddled with RA RA Meds, vitamins and exercise help me move so much better even though I walk with a cane. But my struggles is not with my knees. It’s with my feet. I’ve had both knees replaced in the last 18 months (I’m 47). Together with Dame Judi, I say it’s the best thing I’ve ever had done. My percentage of asymmetry in walking these days is 1%. I did rehab in hospital after each replacement and found it invaluable. Twelve days for the first knee, eight for the second knee and both times I walked out using just a walking stick. Get up, get moving, don’t be afraid of the pain. Also keep massaging the knee - it helps soften scar tissue under the skin and helps the skin and muscles stretch back to normal. Good luck to anyone having a joint replaced.

I had TKR on my right knee three months ago, & although it was very painful for the first couple of weeks, I am thoroughly pleased with the outcome & my progress thus far. The physical therapy is extremely important for a full & speedy recovery, just as Dame Judi says! I still have a few weeks of physical therapy left, and then I will be progressing towards having my left knee replaced, also. The horrible pain from “bone on bone” arthritis is so much worse than the post-surgery healing pain. You can endure the post-surgery pain better, perhaps because you KNOW it is getting better daily! I am 75 now, soon will have another birthday, and I can honestly say that I wish I would have had TKR done long ago, as I have been suffering far too long! So if you are in doubt about it, believe me, you won’t be sorry in making the choice to be pain free.😊

Great advice although I am just 55 I have had past injuries on my right knee which has left me with bone on bone shattered cartilage and twisted and knotted tendons. I am very active and a keen cyclist I can no longer walk far the pain is excruciating if I do too much was offered the cortisone injection lasted only 2-3 weeks and back to square one Doc advice was keep taking the injection for a year. But I have decided to go for the knee replacement now having watched the video and read all the great advice the after pain will be temporarily the bone on bone will only get worse. My left leg is fantastic thank god but I have developed a limp and go down the stairs backwards sometimes I cannot bend my leg it's so bad. Thankfully I don't have sleep disturbances as pain doesn't come with sleep but nothing will stop me now from going for the surgery life is too short for suffering

Had total knee replaced 14 years ago. I’m now 73. Was torture to go thru but would gladly do again. I had torn ligaments and muscles that had to be repaired. I have no pain and do anything I want. I can outwalk my children. I was bone to bone and wish I had done earlier. I waited till I could barely walk. Missed so much. Good attitude and a lot work pays off.

@@mpat100 it doesn’t feel any different than a normal knee. The only thing different that I only notice when I go to an exercise class is that the knees don’t bend quite as far as a natural knee. For example if you are on your knees, you can’t sit back on your heels. Or if you are standing and you bend your leg so that your foot is behind you, you can’t reach back and grab your ankle. But for everyday living, they feel completely natural. I’m very happy because now I can go hiking again and walk long distances.

You have effectively explained why to wait no further. Spent almost a year trying a stem cell procedure that did not help enough. Now regret not having done surgery instead then. God willing I shall return to Dame Judy Dench's testimony after my surgery saying rhetorically: "If she can go up a flight of circular stairs almost right after her surgery you can do THIS." (Parenthetically I am enamored with the LOVELY autumn colors/tones of the room shown. Sorry if name comes up 2x. Some sort of computer glitch we don't know how to fix. True thanks for this. Having had both a hip and a knee replacement the hip rehab is less painful and the knee rehab takes much longer to become comfortable. Water exercises before the surgery helped both situations and were also helpful after surgery. My surgeon also recommended using a rocking chair to gently improve flexibility. Post-surgical therapy is not optional and after a year or so you will forget that it is not original equipment. Good luck to all who contemplate this type of surgery.

Although mine was a hip replacement (both knees coming soon), pre-op conditioning IS very important. I needed to lose quite a bit of weight so I took up swimming and water aerobics. It helped tremendously with my recovery post-op. I almost could not walk in the month before the surgery and was walking 2-3 miles unaided about a month post-op. The surgeon and PT were very pleased almost to the point of amazement about how quick I recovered. Not bad for a 62 year-old curmudgeon.

Within 2 months he flew off to Florida to visit his son to play golf ⛳ Everyday I would watch him walk back and forth, up and down the street, stop bend both knees like he was getting ready to sit , then back up and start walking!! I had my knee replacement at 52 and I have had 7 operations in my life. This was everything you said it was and then some. The problem is. The younger you are when you get it the more pain you will be in. Your nerves and tissue are more alert. The older you are everything is less sensitive. So the older ones saying they are out golfing may be right. I lived in my elevation bed and sat up for 3 months. It took 3 years to get to full benefit. But the pain the first 3-6 months was excruciating.

Kinematically Aligned total knee replacement was the best for myself. I was walking in three days. I was driving in Four days. There was absolutely no Physical Therapy other than at home stretching. No mechanical therapy. No more arthritic pain from the time I came out of anesthesia. No revisions. No mobility issues. Fully recovered and complete mobility and range of motion after 120 days. I had an ACL replacement surgery 24 years prior. It was done 18 years after a completely torn ACL from a ski accident. I can’t speak highly enough of this procedure. It gave me my life back!

My newest knee is almost 5 months old and I am now doing everything I used to do years before. I’m walking up and down stairs and I’m able to walk with no limp or even a cane which I used for the last 15-20 years. I am very happy with my total knee replacements and would gladly do it again. The recovery was not nearly as horrible as I thought but I did push myself and that’s why I’m doing so well. And also an excellent surgeon had something to do with it too, lol.

Dame Judi is completely correct in saying not to leave the operation too long. I’ve been totally stupid and was due to have my first knee replacement 4 years ago but stupidly cancelled it due to being too frightened. Now 4 years later I’ve ended up housebound, unable to drive which has knocked my social life out and can hardly sleep due to awful awful pain not only in my knees but also one of my ankles! My left knee has affected my left hip and right knee has affected my right ankle. I’m only 65 but feel 105 at the moment and life has passed me by the past 18 months due to my disability which didn’t need to get so painful or make me so immobile. I’ve had my pre operation and am now just awaiting the phone call to go in, I’m still absolutely dreading the operation but I feel I have absolutely no choice in the matter now. I’m also dreading after the operation as I cannot walk now and I feel I’ve wasted an opportunity to get my legs stronger before the operation as it’s impossible to do any kind of physio now so will have to be all done after which will probably be much harder and take more time. Please anyone reading this take my advice for what its worth and do not leave having knee replacements until you can no longer walk like I did because it’s horrible being immobile like me due to stupidity and being frightened.

It's 4.18 am as I read this, and I was moments away from deciding to cancel my TKR next month, dreading the op, the post-op and my longsuffering 80 year old husband having to help me through it! Your words give me the incentive to go ahead. My left knee got so much worse this year, and you remind me not to kid myself that it is going to get better, and just to go ahead with faith and positive energy. Hope you will see this reply and know you are NOT stupid. Don't be scared, do the physio afterwards and god bless.

I've had both knees replaced, 4 years apart. Very painful before but both operations successful. One thing to remember don't think that after the op thats it, do the physio exercises, it makes all the difference in the long term

I had both my knees replaced 15 years ago. Total knee replacement was the best thing for me. I did the required post op exercises and have never looked back.

So proud of you Dame Judy. I just had my second total knee replacement. The pain is terrible but I'm determined to get stronger. Pain is something really hard for me to cope with. I love your acting. I especially enjoyed your TV series where you and your first love got back together after being lovers during WWII. It was a great series and I've watched it at least three times. Love your movies too.

Dame Judy you are a marvel. Having to be back to work after 6 weeks must have been so painfull for you. I am now in my 12th week. Very painfull to start with but easing off a bit now. Still very stiff but you are right excersise is crucial. Still a long way to go yet.

Just had total knee replacement on right side just 6 weeks ago. Still having allot of pain especially when I am trying to walk. Feels like something is rubbing on something. Need to strengthen my quads though. Judy is fabulous and so is her Dr. I want to be able to walk a 5K which I hope I can do. Just wish I didn’t feel the clunking. ☺️

Reminds me of Jack Van Impe he said he used to be able to sneak up on Rexella his wife for a little kiss but no longer his knee replacement also made a noise and she could hear him coming. He was a precious Preacher of the End Times biblically and with current events

Thank you so much for your informative talk. I have a friend who is hesitant to have a knee replacement because so many of her friends are worse after the surgery. I just shared your video with her!

I had a total right knee replacement in 2013. It takes time to get back to halfway normal knee movement within 9 months of therapy. You have to want to bend your new knee. It hurts and it will hurt for nearly a year. Be patient. The movement will come, keep working and the therapy will pay off. I went through 7 years of bone on bone pain, no sleep and tons of Ibuprophen. It's the best choice I have made. No pain and my new knee is awesome!

Chris Warren 7th years in pain and ibuprofen I wS 4. Year take aleve I get ulcers and massage my knees and my doctor says forget about in others words live with it. I went to other doctor I found something wrong, I can explained but in two weeks I going to speak with doctor and he will explains what is wrong and going to get the minor surgery, the problem is to do with replacement only a small arrangement. The doctor who do the replacement he told that I do not need physical therapy. Only weeks weeks and here the doctor claims sometime needs one year. At this moment I need in near future a knee replacement in the other left knee. you 7years then when is 10 years you has to another replacement, made yourself a favor does waste your time suffering and destroys you stomach with ulcers.😡😱

Phil Hewitt welcome to my world 🌎 you sounds like you won the lottery. Go immediately to physical therapy and continue at home. So pain go to your doctor he or she has to gave the prescription if the doctor claims that the replacement is good better go to other doctor, do not wait years in pain.😰😡😱
