ANYTIME you have an employer match your contribution to an IRA, TSP 401K, whatever. MAX IT OUT! I have been doing for 35 years at a very average paying job, and that matched 5% each month was hardly missed, but is not an AMAZING lump of money!

Mistake #1: joining the military at all
@curthenry93983 күн бұрын
I was a Machinist in the USAF. Great job, I volunteered for the 3-11 shift. Best part was I only had stay out of site for a couple of hours and after that I was completely left alone with no old puke lifers hassling me. I built a chopper and a custom rifle on a 98 Mauser action on duty using. I had access to all of the Field Maintenance Shops. The shops were the world's best hobby shops. Being a night worker I had a room to myself and a sign on the outside of the door saying day sleeper, I had very few inspections of my room.

I would tell.anyone going in the military. The big don't s are , don't ever tell them you in trouble with the law, don't ever tell them about any heath issue, don't ever tell them about any drugs that you may have taken, and don't lend or borrow money!

When I decided to join (decades ago), I had already talked to many vets and active duty personnel. I knew I didn't want to constantly carry/shoot a gun; wear camo & boots; and was looking at the branch that would give me the best deal in my enlistment contract. I eliminated the army and Marine Corps right away. The Air Force (at that time) didn't have a good promotion record (I saw some retiring at 20 years as an E5) and they wouldn't guarantee me A school. I ended up joining the Navy and getting what I wanted, except duty station). I didn't regret it

By signing a 6 year and getting E-3 out of tech school, you made gross roughly an extra $7,500 for those two years, till you were legible for E-4. Don't know why you down played it as an extra $300.

Thank you. I watched the whole video but don't have gold medal emojis available at the moment. This was very helpful. For me it's Air Force by far. I'm mainly interested in career and education. I've already done college and traveled a lot etc and at a career slump. How does the air force feel about 40+ year old recruits?

Started out as an 11D-Aero Rifleman. Vietnam drawdown happened, involuntary reclassed as 64C. Re-enlisted, the 2 year later reclassed again as 63H. Spent 2 years in that MOS, finished my degree and then applied for WO in MOS 630A. Received a direct appointment and then went on to retire with 21 years.

I don't know of any first termer that came in to do 20. Those decisions are made well after initial entry. I can tell you that in my day 85% chose to ETS rather than re-enlist. Of the remaining 15%, 10% would re-enlist for a new MOS, and the remaining 5% would choose PDA or Station of Choice in current MOS. An interesting fact though, 5% of individuals who were US's (Draftees), would re-enlist for a new MOS with a bonus Bonuses were a big deal around 1969. You could draw up to $2K for your current MOS. A new MOS could yield $5K after graduating from schooling. Re-enlsting for Vietnam would get you $10K tax free as it would be paid in-country.

I was in aircraft avionics. I got to talk to pilots all the time. But also, I would think that even though my job could be dirty at times, it was the best. We weren’t like crew chiefs or weapons techs who got greasy but sometimes shutting the planes down you would get a little jp4 on you. I would also say that fighter pilot would be the best in prestige. My dad trained pilots to navigate, so he was an enlisted pilot. I think Air traffic control and meteorologist would be in the upper echelons of jobs in terms of having a high IQ to do them. Also, probably Astronaut.. That would be a gas to go to space.
